Thanks so much to you and Garry for the warm welcome.  As the car has a seized block (rust in cylinder 1), the restoration is now fully out of my league.  I have plenty of stories and pictures to share, however I need to find some references on where to send it for (mechanical) restoration as the owners are not yet concerned for aesthetics.  I spoke with David a Buds Benz in GA who stated that Metric Motors is closing shop, so I don't yet know where to send it to get the process started.  :'(

So, if you have a son, a really cool photo would be one of you and him in the car now . . .

Agreed!  We need to put that together... except my son is 15 now and taller than me :)

Hi,  had a "bad" 1968 280sl with lots of surprize problems.  Sold it and now Im back in the market.  I was told to stay with a 1971 model?  However just read that MB is bringing out a 2025 280sl, based on the old 1968/71 look.  Anyone else heard about it?

Hello. I'm Craig a 61 yo native of Sacramento CA. A neighbor just gave me her 1969 280sl. I recall the car running about 1986 but I think it has been under a cover in her carport since. The tires are all flat and won't hold air. I'm going to purchase some Fuchs with rubber on them today and change out the steel wheels so that I can roll it to my place and start poking around.
I used to restore MG's, mainly B's, and I've cleaned up a 68 Firebird Convt and a 78 Blazer. Although I grew up with a 300sl gullwing in the garage, that was dad's car and I never touched it. This will be my first foray into Teutonic wrenching, and I appreciate any advice.
I've already learned that the Fuchs take a longer lug than the steel wheel. Makes sense but who'd have thought...?
Glad to be part of the community

Hello Craig, nice to meet you

Can i please have your address, i'd like to move next door to your neighbour, does she have any other cars she wants to give away?

You'll find everything you need on this forum or in the technical manual, but sometimes it can be challenging to find, so just ask, most experts on these cars are part of this community and will be pleased to assist

Hello Craig and congratulations on your "gift". There are a few of us Pagoda owners here in the Sacramento region and I welcome you to this Forum. You won't find a better bunch of knowledgable and enthusiastic folks for this great automobile anywhere else.

Hello Stanley,
1963-1971 are all relatively similar so don’t overlook a good car just because it’s not 1971. Each model is subtly different and each has something to like.
Did not know about the 2025 280sl. Online images and videos all look different so I guess they are interpretations and Mercedes has not released the design.

Hi, my name is Sam, I'm 66 and I live in Carmel, IN for now.  In 2024, I became the owner of a 1970 Dark Blue 280SL with Grey leather interior.  The car belonged to a good friend of mine who passed in an airplane accident at Thanksgiving of 2023.  He got me into Mercedes and introduced me to my wife. His family asked me to help them as they looked at selling my friend's 1991 560SEL, 197X 450SL and the 70 280SL.  I ended up buying the 560SEL and 280SL and urged them to keep the 450SL. My goal is to renew/restore them as a tribute to my friend.  I've spent the last year renewing the 560, as it was the easiest job to tackle and am now pretty much done, or will be as soon as I get the new fuel pumps in.  Just starting on the 280 and figured I needed some resources and just joined.  I've traced the background of the car to understand based on the data card that it was part of the NATO program, belonging to a Captain Lavoie, later ending up near Quebec and getting restored at MERCEDES BENZ Canada in Quebec in 1990. From there it was sold at the Auburn Duesenberg Festival Auction to a Ft Wayne, IN dealer, who then sold it in 1999 to my friend, Randy.  He drove it rarely and so it has sat for awhile. Needing a quick win, I gave it a good polish and then restored a Eckel Speziel Ski Rack ("Eckel München Germany") that was in the trunk and identified on the data card as a factory option.  They turned out good but now I am just getting into the real project.  The car runs, but is running rich and dies when I depress the clutch when shifting.  I'm looking forward to learning from everyone and hope to be able to share my experience.  Besides the 560SEL and 280SEL, I also own a 1987 190e 2.3-16 and a 2004 SL55 and my wife has a 2012 E550 Cabriolet.  Thank you all in advance!

Sam

Vander, I was at Artmobilia last couple of years also.  I won my class last year with a Mercedes 190E 2.3-16 in the Artmobilia show and won the Mercedes Grande award for Best Sedan with the same car.  I plan to be there this year, but will probably bring a different car this year.  There were some beautiful W113s at the show.

Welcome Scott, I know Maineville well, I am in Columbus. Great looking cars you have there! I had a ponton coupe I sold last year, Mercedes did not skimp on the interiors on those.
