Thanks Rodd, all done!  Hopefully this and your other advice helps José Luis in Salamanca as well.  We'd all like to see some photos of a very early 230SL!

Me too!  That's an early car.  I sent him a PM in both languages (Google translate) with advice on finding Spanish speaking members who could help him get used to the forum.

Hello Pagoda site, I'm a new member as of today and a new owner of a 1970 280SL as of yesterday. I spent lots of time in the Mustang and Shelby markets and finally bought a classic 450SL last year and now a 280SL. These cars are so nice looking and I'm looking forward to expanding my knowledge on the cars and slowing bringing it back to its starting beauty.

Tim,

Welcome to the group! I also had a 450 SL some years back and thoroughly enjoyed. A much different car than the Pagoda but still a great driver.

We all stand ready to assist as needed.

Thanks Jonny, I certainly will take you up on the help. My Pagoda is not currently running and through some discovery it looks like the previous owner burned up some wires near the alternator. I suspect he reversed the battery cables. Soon as I have a chance to get it on my lift, I will see what I'm up against. I know the knowledge with this group is excellent and thorough. Looking forward to the learning curve.

Take care,

Tim

Hello Tim, Let me add a welcome to this board which you will find is a great resource for your SL. I see you live in El Dorado Hills as well. I moved down the hill last year from the Placerville area and as you can see, I have had my SL for quite a long time. If you would like to stop by and see the car, send me a PM.

Hi All,

I’m also a new member and look forward to learning a lot from you all and engaging in discussions. I took over my dad’s 1970 280sl a few months ago after he suddenly passed, so I am getting up to speed in terms of how to best care for it and continue its/his legacy. I don’t have all of the details handy, but it was about a decade ago he bought the car and took on the project to restore it with my grandpa.

I’ll be diving through the site, but any tips on where to start out for the basics would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Cam

Cam,

Sorry to hear about your father.

If you can arrange to meet with another local Pagoda owner or two and just talk for a few hours, that's a great start.  If you have time, attend Pagoda Fest in Chicago.  See the Events forum.

Advice on how to pick up an in-progress restoration, that's difficult.  How much do you know about the restoration's progress?  How much do you know about restoring cars in general?  1960's Mercedes specifically?  Hiring out the work or doing it yourself?  Lots of variables, but this is the best place for you.  20 years of forum messages to search through.  Experienced owners and specialists willing to help.
Start a thread in the General discussion to get help.

Re: New member introduction: '69 280SL that hasn't moved in 37 years
« Reply #1509 on: July 26, 2023, 02:14:50 »
Hi All,

I finally convinced my dad to let me get my hands on the 1969 280SL that's been under cover in his climate-controlled garage for the last 37 Years.  It was last registered and driven in 1986 and has since been buried beneath kayaks and empty boxes.  The trunk lid, protected by a car cover and some foam was used to display the plans for the airplane he's been building (an RV-9).  The partially assembled wings sit in custom made assembly jigs behind the car, partially obstructing access and making pulling it out a significant logistical challenge.

I have uncovered the car enough to have gathered the VIN (113.044-10-009817), so it's a left-hand drive manual built in April of 1969.  Option codes show it as a US model (491), with a left side mirror (503), and was originally delivered with the Becker Grand Prix radio (519), which is missing.  It was delivered with Dark Maroon paint on the body and hard-top (460G) with the hard top installed and the soft top folded (6). I am thankful for the detailed info on the data cards and codes on this forum.

I've done some digging around to try and ascertain the condition.  There's no obvious rust on the outside of the card, but the chrome has some pitting, and the paint is certainly dirty with some scratches in a number of places.  In the trunk wells I see very minor surface rust; I have read is a common location to look along with under the carpeted storage area covers behind the seats.  I haven't been able to check running boards or floor pans and haven't really explored under the car yet as it's just too difficult to do in it's current location.  It appears that the car has had some major work in the past as both front quarter panels seem to have been replaced (based on not seeing the typical spot welds).  Drivers side rear quarter panel also seem to have been replaced and there's some deformation of the wheel well surround as visible inside the trunk.   Still has original toolkit, jack, spare tire and all.  I have found service records up through my dad's purchase of the car.   He only drove it on weekends locally for a few years before parking it for that last time in 1986 so he put very little mileage on the car. but it's not clear to me what the actual mileage is because my dad told me the odometer was broken.  The last registration showed something like 75K miles.

I am really enjoying digging through the information on the forum and trying to decide on my next steps.  I'll be looking for help and guidance along the way as I have never tried to breathe new life into a car like this, but I am looking forward to learning from all those that have put in the elbow grease and energy to restore a W113.

Andrew,

Welcome to the Group!  It is so awesome that you've joined as a full member and have already benefitted through your research.  As you have already discovered, this Group's 20 years of operation has compiled a lot of information in the Forums and Tech Manual and the Search feature works very well.

What is your experience with maintaining, repairing, and/or restoring cars?

I have always found a lot of benefit from meeting with fellow Group members and seeing their cars in person.  Use the membership list (sort by state) to find other PA members and see if you can get 2 or 3 others to get together on a weekend or at some car show.  https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?action=mlist

Very nice write up.  Great that you joined as a full member— the value is tremendous and supports the site.

You may want to join the Chicago pagoda event (pagoda not needed) that takes place end of September.  Look under events for “Chicago Pagodafest”   These events happen in the USA once every couple of years.  Lots of tech talk and you would meet lots and lots of owners with their pagodas in various states.

When I fist got my pagoda, I lived in France and joined the pagoda event in Belgium without my Pagoda - met amazing folks and learned a huge amount.

Keep us up to date on your uncovering

Andrew,

Welcome to the group! This is the place to be to get your car back up and running.

What I would suggest is the you become very familiar with the search functionality on the site. Just about every question for getting a car on the road has been addressed in some form or another.

Taking a bit of time with the search - easiest to use the "Search" link from the line of items beginning with "Home." This will allow you to easily search the entire forum.

Also start looking through the technical manual - LOTS of information there.

Hi Rod, I have very little experience with restoring cars, but I am a craftsman of sorts.  I am a skilled welder, metal worker, woodworker and have done some upholstery work too.  I actually like to work with many different materials.  I have worked in the automation industry for many years so I have good electrical, electronic, and mechanical skills, but have never really applied the skills to my cars.  I helped a friend years ago with welding up stress cracks in a one-of-a-kind, hand-built, all aluminum Porsche racing car. We actually build a custom cylindrical mount so we could roll the car onto any side so as to be able to weld in a good orientation. Welding aluminum is so touchy we didn't want to be doing it in awkward positions.

Hello, new member here!

I saw another lovely Pagoda at the Cars & Coffee of LA at Griffith Park this weekend and chatted with the owner of a lovely 230SL.. he gave me a few more notes to add to my "Dream Car Garage" Notes and while I was updating the notes I saw this forum was previously saved. Decided I would sign up and say hi!

Can someone point me to a FAQ of the differences between the 230, 250 & 280. Trying to get more research done now and maybe someday I can be ready to jump when I find a good one in my price range & requirements

Pretty sure its a Manual 230 though...

Hi 2mAn,

A basic Google should serve you well on the basic differences across the models.  Full (paying) Members to our site have access to a detailed list of running changes that occurred throughout all the models, but these were mostly compiled from other books that have been published in years past.  I'm not sure how much detail your looking for.  Some people prefer the 250 and 280 engine for the larger displacement (power) and integrity of additional main bearings on the crankshaft.  There was a major cosmetic change in the middle of the 250 run where the 230 cosmetics changed to what would become the 280 cosmetics.  The cars all share the same 4 speed automatic transmission, and interesting one where 1st gear isn't really used.  Most manuals were 4 speed, but a rare (expensive to fix now!) 5 speed was also available.  A variety of differential final drive ratios were available over the years, and sometimes people take differentials from other MB cars of the period to get even something more to their liking.  There are a lot of little things to discuss as changes over time.  If you KNOW you are DEFINITELY buying a Pagoda, then try get get last minute tickets to our Pagoda Fest in Chicago, it is covered in our Events forum and there should be about 90 members/owners there, many with their cars!  https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=31379.0

That's a good point.  As this year is the 60th anniversary of the W113 launch, there have been quite a number of recent magazine (and internet) articles written about the Pagoda.  So, more Google work to be done there!

Also, if you go ahead and join as a full member now, you will have access to the Tech Manual which has some good compiled, detailed info on a number of topics.  There's some info on buying a car.  https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Buying/Start  But, you could also start a thread in General Discussion about that as well.

Good morning,
I am a French collector of classic vehicles, especially American ones, and more precisely of Lincoln Continental and Chevrolet, 3 of each. I also have a few British and Italian cars and even a American Lafrance fire truck but not yet a german one. I am interested in buying a 280 SL of 1968 which was originally purchased in France and imported into the USA. I need your opinion and advices. It seems to me to be very beautiful and at a reasonable price but what do you think?

https://www.motorcarclassics.com/1969-mercedes-benz-280-sl-c-227.htm

I add that I paid the $30 yesterday to become a full member of the forum but that I do not see where I can post this request.
Thank you all! And sorry for my English if you can’t understand what I write.

Welcome.  Posting this as a new topic in the General Discussion board would have been more appropriate than a reply here, as this could become a long discussion.

I dislike it when a restorer or painter uses black in the engine bay & under hood.

The leather over the instrument cluster is toast.

Since you're a full member, you have access to this:

I know a number of things are different between 230SL and 280SL, but it's still a good place to start your education.
