Ok so I’ve the engine to idle around 900rpm. Waiting on. Head gasket and a leak down tester  I’ve ordered online . Yes compression gauge is fine as I cross checked with another one I have.

Since I’ve been running it on the stand for the last week or so the compression has increased slightly by 5psi (now at 115 psi) across all cylinders and she has started to idle well ,vacuum gauge  needle stay steady at 13 inches of mercury (i know you need 14 min) .  Could it be that the new rings and valves are bedding in?

I had blocked the pipe  on the intake manifold in between the carburettors to tune the carbs they seem to be almost there my question Is  should I run the engine while it’s blocked or open ended.? Opening it increased the vacuum reading to 14-15 .

Regards

..how can we make sure that the 2 little fingers of the bearing stays aligned and in perfect contact with the same on clutch fork?..
The throwout bearing slides back and forth on the sleeve and the sleeve keeps the bearing centered on the pressure plate. On a 230SL the clutch fork "fingers" have spring retainers holding the bearing in place (see pics).

When adjusting the glass, be sure to answer the question of whether or not you are going to be using the hardtop. If you are, the recommendation is to put the glass in, adjust, etc to fit it to the hardtop.

Then put up the convertible top and adjust the top to fit the glass.

The hard top will not give at all if there is a slight misfit, the top will.

If you don't plan to use the hard top, the adjustment is done with the convertible top

Sun Valley Transmissions mainly rebuild automactic's. Try Buds Benz, they are capable and have done plenty. Good Luck ;)

You can also try Sun Valley Transmissions in Southern California.  They seem to specialize in Mercedes, and I've seen a lot of good comments about them on the board (search Sun Valley transmission to find some posts).

Hi, Seamus,

I know nothing about transmissions, but I'm sure I've read somewhere on the forum that the flywheels for the earlier and later transmissions are not interchangeable.  That would make me suspect that there could be a difference somewhere.  Have you checked part numbers for the two models to see if they're the same (or if the 230SL part number is replaced by the 280SL part number)?

Just my thoughts,

General Discussion / A/C belt adjustment
« Last post by Michael Foster on July 01, 2025, 19:50:50 »
I looked everywhere on how to adjust the A/C belts and found nothing. I have the A/C compressor underneath the alternator. So I removed the Alternator, (lots of fun) and after adjusting the A/C belts I see that it is not required removing the alternator since the A/C belt adjuster is available underneath the Alternator.  I will send photo. I hope this will save someone a lot of time.

This is the earlier smaller diameter cap, not the full size wheel cover. Mercedes part number is 186 401 00 25 and the Mercedes online price is $420.00 each so, it is priced very inexpensively at $150 and I only have this one unit. This hub cap is genuine Mercedes Benz, NOS (new old stock) and has never been installed. I am the founder and former owner of EUROPARTS of San Diego, which I owned and operated for 37 years before selling the business and retiring in November 2022.  Most of my old W113 inventory is long gone but, I still have a few items left in addition to these.  I am located in Poway, CA (Suburban San Diego) and am happy to email photos to anyone who wishes to see any items.

These were used on many early models from 1954 to 1971: (There may be others)
