There's different gearing, with the earliest 230SL transmissions being a little bit lower. I can't recall any other differences, though I'm sure others will know.

Hi, Seamus,

I know nothing about transmissions, but I'm sure I've read somewhere on the forum that the flywheels for the earlier and later transmissions are not interchangeable.  That would make me suspect that there could be a difference somewhere.  Have you checked part numbers for the two models to see if they're the same (or if the 230SL part number is replaced by the 280SL part number)?

Just my thoughts,
