It can be anything. It took me 2 years to get rid of all the vibration related noises. When you hear it from top of dash, it does not mean it is made there. From my experience:
- buttons in the radio - when face plate was fitted in a certain way they were making noise
- lose washers on bolts (any washers that may be lose on the wood trim studs? screw that holds central small trim piece between vent levers?)
- lose vent levers cables
- clock or lighter fitting
- radio screws
- brackets for electric harness and blinker relay
- something else you did not tightened

Any chance the bulbs in the heater levers are loose, or the grate that goes over the center speaker is loose? Any disconnected electronics with loose grounds flopping around?

Mike,

The map of the route will be in the upcoming Pagoda Notes.

Since we start in Knoxville at the hotel, it's about an hour to get to Tellico Plains, TN which is the beginning of the Cherohala Skyway. That's maybe about an hour. Before anyone gets on, a good idea for any "necessary stops" as well as fuel; as the Skyway has many places to pull over and off, but no towns along the way. Another hour or so, and that part of the ride is over, in Robbinsville, NC. That's lunchtime. Then the ride back which includes the Tail of the Dragon. The google map shows the continuous drive (no stops) at 3:45, 156 miles. Harry Bailey will have some shorter routes in the area for those that don't want to do this drive--but as these are some of the best driving roads you'll find, it's worth it.

Everyone will be provided with proper route guidance.

Hi All,

Just finished having my 250SL painted and after putting the dash back together I have a fairly loud vibrating noise coming from the top of the dash.   I have taken most of the dash apart except the Center Cluster, Speedometer and Vents; and I also removed the cowl.  Noise isn’t constant, mostly happens when I accelerate and then let off the gas completely and coast.   With the dash open I have been grabbing things to see if it stops, but no luck.

Any thoughts on what it might be?

Thanks,

Michael

Here is this cylinder head with fresh valves and guides etc.
They are the same design but go from 1960 to 1966 or so.

Electrical and Instruments / Optima battery
« Last post by mdsalemi on July 12, 2025, 17:02:11 »
I just replaced my battery today with an Optima red top Group 34R. Like the prior battery there’s a plastic lift underneath which raises the battery about 3/4 of an inch. The battery holder fits, although not exactly perfectly. The frame is very close to the edges of the battery…perhaps a little too close for my comfort. Presently the battery is installed and tight.

Wondering if anyone has fabricated anything to place on top of the optima battery such that the factory battery hold down frame fits a bit better?

By the way, I'm loving the ride with the new urethane bushings

I ended up buying the bolts and spacers from niemoeller.  $17 shipping (added a few more bits and pieces that I needed to make it worthwhile).  Ordered on June 30 - received on July 3.

Peak foliage for that area is usually mid October. The ride is estimated around 4 hours with a lunch stop planned around the 2:20 mark (and before the tail of the dragon section). There are lots of places to stop along the route if needed.  The ride is planned for Friday with hope that the traffic will be a bit lighter.
