Vibration Noise from Dash
« on: July 12, 2025, 18:47:59 »
Hi All,

Just finished having my 250SL painted and after putting the dash back together I have a fairly loud vibrating noise coming from the top of the dash.   I have taken most of the dash apart except the Center Cluster, Speedometer and Vents; and I also removed the cowl.  Noise isn’t constant, mostly happens when I accelerate and then let off the gas completely and coast.   With the dash open I have been grabbing things to see if it stops, but no luck.

Any thoughts on what it might be?

Thanks,

Michael

Any chance the bulbs in the heater levers are loose, or the grate that goes over the center speaker is loose? Any disconnected electronics with loose grounds flopping around?

It can be anything. It took me 2 years to get rid of all the vibration related noises. When you hear it from top of dash, it does not mean it is made there. From my experience:
- buttons in the radio - when face plate was fitted in a certain way they were making noise
- lose washers on bolts (any washers that may be lose on the wood trim studs? screw that holds central small trim piece between vent levers?)
- lose vent levers cables
- clock or lighter fitting
- radio screws
- brackets for electric harness and blinker relay
- something else you did not tightened

Two other things worth checking... My mechanic suggested the intermittent rattling (mostly at traffic lights) could be coming from a plate sat above part of the heater unit on the passenger side. Unfortunately I cannot find a diagram or part code but maybe someone can help there.

What ended up eliminating all the noticeable rattles from my dash was replacing my worn engine mounts!

It can be coming from  the heater core plate unwelded

Thanks for the suggestions.

The radio, all the wood pieces, clock, tach, glove box are all out so none of those.

Checked the bulbs on the heater controls, and they seem fine.

I was hoping to avoid taking the vents and the heating unit, but it seems I may have to

I like Rahul's idea with engine mounts, too. How are they, and how is all the rubber associated with your suspension?

Engine was rebuilt a few years ago and engine mounts are new.

Front suspension rubber has not been replaced, Could suspension cause noise in upper dashboard?

Don't forget to refresh the sub-frame mounts if you're updating that type of stuff from.
