I see a tragic pagoda on my ride to work every day. 280SL without head rests. It's parked in the fenced in back of a car dealers lot, maroon, with hard top, ny tags expired in 95. I approached one of the salesmen about it who said it belongs to his boss, and not for sale. I told him that the one of the windows was down and he said he'd let him know. needless to say several weeks later the window is the same and the poor car sits.

Hey Dick. While not half as exciting as a blonde in a Pagoda in Australia, yesterday an older gentleman in a white one passed me on 174 while I was picking up the kids (I was in the F150). I may have seen him once before. In addition, the other day a lady came up to me in Nevada City and explained that she has a 230SL parked in her garage gathering dust. She wants to sell it -- I offered to look at it and help price it (hmmm)... So, there may be more closer to 10 Pagodas right here in our dinky western Nevada County...

The other day in the Los Angeles area I briefly followed a white 250SL that appeared to be very clean, but it had a bike rack mounted on the trunk!!  Wonder how often he repairs and refinishes the trunk lid?

I really just like the double-take looks and very odd comments...
One day I go for coffee in my red Pagoda and the next day I take the Yellow one! One guy told me "it's beautiful, but why did you paint it yellow, the red was really a supurb paint job?" I smiled and said I agree, maybe I'll go back to red tomorrow! He thinks I'm nuts!!

When I drive the 260... nobody says anything (?)

That's what I noticed as well - we get so many compliments ("what a nice car you have")!, while modern cars that can be twice as expensive to buy and much more expensive to drive (mostly due to the depreciation) never get a second look or compliment.
The other thing people, who are not 'into' classic cars, tend to say, after they hear my car is 37 years old, "but it still looks so good, it's like new!". I then always say: "any car could look like this after 37 years, if only they were maintained properly" which is true of course, however nobody ever replies, they just sort of keep looking amazed.

Thursday 11th May, I was driving to my motel and there coming towards me was a 230SL (RHD mirror) being driven by a blonde woman who was a bit startled to see another Pagoda.
We waved and continued on. (do Pagoda people wave to each other?)
The car looked to be in great condition with a cream colour soft top  and a red interior.
I never see another Pagoda unless there is a MB Qld Club run.

Hey Dick M

The car was white with a cream coloured soft top and red interior.
It looked great.

A couple of days ago I saw a white SL with a dark brown soft top on the Dulles Toll Road.  It was too far away to tell if it was a 230, 250 or 280.  Sure looked great though!

Does this count? Today my sister in Santa Barbara emailed my wife (here, our new home, 7 hours away) and said "you better check the garage because I think I saw James in his 230SL here in SB yesterday!" Well, it sure wasn't me but I guess it was a "nice white" Pagoda (with an obviously handsome guy driving it...  ;) ). I suppose it could have been our own "65autoSL" (Bo). Bo were ya out and about this weekend?

hi james, i guess it probably was me your sister saw in santa barbara. i drive the sl everyday. i drive to goleta everyday (work sb chrysler jeep) and on the weekends especialy if it's a nice day. i have a few other cars but this is the only one i like to drive. my grandpa said to me the other day that i should start driving it less. that i should start driving my 300sd for better gas mileage etc. etc. i looked at him and smiled.he has no idea. i told him this damn car is the only thing that keeps me sane! we laughed and i took him for a little ride. i haven't heard anymore "suggestions" since. please tell your sister to say hi next time. and thanks for the nice compliment too.

I saw a dark olive (291) 280SL in Charleston, SC this weekend driving down Meeting Street.  Within five minutes I saw a signal red 190SL.  This made my heart sing!

Not Pagodas, but still fun: on Saturday saw a very nice 300 SL gullwing crossing an intersection ahead of me.  Half a block later I saw it joint up with a 300 SL roadster, silver/grey with black hardtop, very sharp color combo.  Definitely not a common sight around here.

Out for a run on Saturday morning, had a pristine red pagoda with the top up drive by (so I KNOW you have AC) in Delray Beach, Florida, on Military or Clintmore, don't recall which.  It was the first time I heard a W113 exhaust note from outside the car, what a nice sound!  Was that a board member?  Maybe Kevin in Boca?

Not me. Light Ivory with no A/C. This time of year only out at night or early am due to heat  8) . Was parked at Mizner Park on Sunday night. Not aware of a local pristine red car.

I Saw a gray 280 with the '68-'69 headlights on San Jose Blvd. here in Jacksonville Monday night.  The top was a shade darker gray than the body.  He got a little annoyed with me driving around him so I could see all sides.  Guess he didn't know why a BMW driver was waving and smiling.

I have seen a silver and a brown W113 in Montreal.  I was driving my red W113 eastbound on Hwy 40 in Montreal about a week ago and a silver one was westbound on Hwy 40, during a higher traffic time.

Spotted a -very- dark blue one tooling around downtown Amsterdam this evening around 10 PM. Top down (it is warm currently, some 27 degrees Celcius), blonde lady behind the wheel and a small girl (daughter?) in the passenger seat. What a beautiful sight!

It happened tonight!   I'm driving down a local "corn road" taking my son to see Superman Returns...and I see it cresting a hill.    I choked to my son  "there's another pagoda!"   So what did I do?   I did a dangerous U turn and followed the guy a couple miles to his destination (following in my daughter's Jeep).    Struck up a good conversation and will follow up later to get together...remember, there's only about 5 of these in Evansville.

...and we still made it to Superman on time!

Haven't seen any lately on my commute or on various trips around Northern CA (Bay Area... mostly South Bay though).  Interestingly, I've seen one parked in a drive-way about a mile from me.... white with some kind of modern chrome wheels on it.  I haven't slowed down enough to check it out otherwise.... think it's a 230SL though.  I'll have to drop by and say hi to the owner one of these times.

There was one (baby-blue, dark blue soft-top), '69 280SL auto...at work sometimes in another parking lot.... turned out a lady I worked with owned it but she wanted to sell it... her dad's originally... so she was the original owner's daughter.  I put her in touch with somebody in San Jose that knew who was in the market for one like hers... it needed some work on the uphostery, dash, some minor door dings, the engine bay was a mess though.... no telling what kind of hack mechanic's had jury-rigged everything over the years to keep it running.  Now if it just been a 4 speed manual I would have taken it off her hands for her (baby-blue's not quite in my color liking regime though).  Fortunately, she got a good price for it (more than I would have paid for it).... but the buyer turned it around.... had the dings taken out.... cleaned up the engine and engine bay... replaced the floor Matts... took the dash apart, replaced the dash and cleaned up / refurbished the original wood... and sold it for a healthy profit within a couple months (circa 20% roi after expenses... not a bad return for 2 months use of cash).

Anyway... I'm not seeing as many on the road as I used to lately.  Saw one last year in Sausalito cruising around downtown with top down during the evening (7 pm) in summer --- georgeous maroon red (whatever the actual MB color) 280SL automatic.... a single guy driving, trolling for something.

Saw two more today! One parked on the side of the road in downtown Amsterdam. Then, having dinner in a restaurant, with my back to the open doors facing the street, I heard a familiar sound, quickly turned around and spotted another Pagoda driving by ... again in downtown Amsterdam. So that makes three in just two days. Plus my own, that I drove today to work on my boat.

Hi,

I live in Parker, Colorado.  I saw a woman driving a top-down white Pagoda on Jordan Road on Saturday, and on Friday the same car but with a man and I presume the same woman on Motsenbacker Road.  I wonder if they read this forum.

Cheers,

There were two in my mechanic's garage today. A 230SL, which I confused with mine since it has exactly the same body and softtop color but with a manual shift, and a brown 280SL. I asked him to hand over the Pagoda SL Group cards.
