I noticed my 250SL has square edge chrome exhaust tips which happens to be the least original car of my 3 Pagoda's so I always assumed they were after-market.
How do I know if they are genuine or not? Is there someone out there selling after-market square edged tips, or do we assume them to be genuine when seen on a car?

Cheers

That car occasionally surprises me! Originally sent to Scotland, then privately exported to the USA - and I bought it off a dealer in Connecticut who was advertising it on a UK site hoping to find someone interested in a RHD.
Least original of my cars but is the only Pagoda I own with the original, small, Floor mat* on the RHS of the Trunk, and now the only one with original exhaust tips. Go figure.

(*I spent days restoring that small floor mat to put in my Burgundy 280SL  - really pleased how it finished, only to find out it doesn't fit in the 280SL because they have different jacks  ;D)

Oh boy!  Look what my poor orphan has.

I had my exhaust system installed by Midas back in 1989. Both exhaust tips were replaced; the invoice shows both having the same part number.  However, one is round and the other square.  Just now noticed they are different.

Most amazing about the round/square combination! There must have been that one lonely square edge tip on the shelf somewhere. And in the original package no doubt, so probably not easily noticed from the outside.

Very cool....

I could easily fabricate these but there would be so much labour time involved that they woiuld have to be 4 x the cost of the round tips. Is it worth it?

And they are to look "brushed" or mat on the tips? Or you shall chrome them?

I have an appointment for chrome in July so it will be done at that time along with some other items.

Yes, it makes no sense to do what I've done but more a challenge.  The tips were purchased from Timevalve for $85.00 .  The machine shop charge was another $250.00 for the first one.  Perhaps the next might be less.

I'm not so sure what happened to the chrome surface during the process.

The old Porsche 911s used that tip. Those boys stress about them too!

I indicated to Fernando, hauser, that i would love to get a set of the square tipped exhausts if the price was reasonable. He has continued to pursue the possibility of having some more made by his fabricator.

I put this out there as a feeler as to the amount of interest from our members would there be in obtaining a set.  Fernando does not know the cost but it could be around $150+or - for a set depending on the number making it higher or lower.

Is there any interest from the Members in following this up?

I'm assuming the other models of the era also had the square tipped exhaust tips?  In particular, did the 6.3 originally have these?  If so this might increase the order number and lower the cost since there are so many other people that love to restore to original be it a W110 or a W100!

For some reason I picked up a single exhaust tip from a sedan which had the square tip. The length was shorter than a W113 and the diameter was larger but it has the square tip.

I would be interested if they can be produced in the $150/set range for the W113.

I also found a single square tip (used) some years ago, it had, as Frank has stated, a slightly larger diameter. I gave it to a friend of mine who handles a number of other cars of the era. He indicated it was for a sedan - but I can't say if it was for a 6.3.

Hi Gary,
I would be interested in a pair for around $ 150. I liked the square tip look since i saw them on Mazmonza's ( Maurice's ) car and have been hoping a deal like this might come up since the topic started.

Stay safe out there.
