230SL Gauges
« on: November 12, 2013, 00:00:21 »
Hello,
Restoration continues on my 230SL. David Lathem, Brad, Jeff, and the rest of the Bud's Benz team are doing an outstanding job!

I brought the speedometer, tachometer, and center cluster home for a clean-up - thought I'd replace one of the bezels, clean the glass, gauge faces, etc..  I noticed that the speedo bezel had been pried off some time in the past obviously meaning it's been worked on, perhaps to repair the trip meter (which still doesn't work).
At this point I'm not so sure I want to (re) attempt to repair the trip meter or whatever else the PO may have 'fixed' inside the speedometer. I'm considering sending all three (speedo, tach, cluster) to Palo Alto Speedometer for restoration.  I first want to ensure these are original VDO gauges for an early 230. Is it possible to determine these are correct for an early 230 based on p/n on the face of each gauge? Here's the numbers:
Tachometer - 000 542 3716
Speedometer - 003 542 78 06

thanks for any advice, Charles

Charles,
hi,
not sure about the pn's.  you could e mail the classic center to verify.

PA speedo has rebuilt all of my gauges.
they came back nice and clean, new chrome etc.
but after a while, sometimes,  the tach and speedo would not work unless I gave them a gentle tap.

when I asked them about a repair, they wanted me to send them in to get a quote and did not offer to repair under warranty.

Those are good numbers for the tach and speedo according to the EPC.

If your instruments work well, not sure what you would gain by sending them out.  Pretty simple to pry the trim off and clean the glass.

I believe EPC means Electronic Parts Catalog, from Mercedes Benz, online.
