Hello

I have been following the forum for a while and have just come across the subject.
I am in the middle of restoring my 1964 230SL and in need a set of these firewall pads for a left hand drive. Can they still be ordered. If yes I would like a set.

I would also be interested in a set of inside firewall pads as well.

Thanks

Hi Alfred,

I confirmed my interest for three firewall pad sets in a post in this thread on november 17, one for each of my pagodas. As well as in several PM to you directly. Still I am missing from your list. This was after we agreed thru Pm that I would wait for the second batch, since I earlier confirmed that I would take two sets.

Hello Christian,
you only get an email notification if you subscribe to the topic. Click on "Topic Tools" and you will see what you need to do.
Second, yes pay the invoice at your convenience and David Gallon will ship you the items, but most likely after the holidays, first week in the new year.

I don't know if this is the right place to do so but I would buy a LHS set if still available. I am also interested in the
Interior pads when they become available.

Thanks and Happy New Year to all.

This thread is for ordering a Firewall pad, getting info about paying, etc.

For information about installing the pad, the pro and cons of using contact cement, a step by step description by an amateur installer, photo of the installed pad, and more, look at http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=15812.0

Dear Alfred,

If it is still possible, I also would be interested in an LHD set (280SL, 1970). I followed your earlier suggestion to go through the German connection, but I am not sure how responsive they would be or even if they did get any sets from you (their site is, in essence, being built). I will add/send necessary details upon your kind confirmation on availability.

Best regards,
Pawel

Alfred, looks like the European connection you suggested worked - Mehmed knew of one piece and I am in touch with another colleague to get the pad. I hope it works. I would likestill to be in for the inside and trunk pieces, if possible....

Here's a photo from the April 1965 edition of Australian Sports Car World showing the firewall pad disintegrating on an almost brand new 230sl. No hope of an original 230sl pad surviving.

That's a nice picture Dave. I wish I could get a high resolution copy of it. Keep in mind that there were at least three different versions of the honeycomb firewall paddings used by MB. The early one you show had a thick backing, often referred to as Coco mat, Jute, Hemp, fiber, that did not provide a good support for the thin shell that was actually the heat resistant/ flame resistant portion of the pad. I believe this is why MB changed the material slightly in subsequent 250SL, 280SL cars and used a stronger "bitumen" layer and a thin 3mm foam backing instead. The foam disintegrated after many years of use as well, but at least the rest of the pad was quite durable and stayed intact on many cars....
