I was riding along in an "S"-class taxi in Dusseldorf early this morning and just as I was thinking about 190 SLs (a former colleague had sent me an email about 190 SL engine rebuilding yesterday evening, and for some reason I was thinking about that email) I spotted one parked beside the road! As I was recovering from this remarkable coincidence I saw a Pagoda, parked just a bit further down the street!

This coming Thursday I can myself be spotted driving from Amsterdam to Frankfurt, and on Friday back again, for a business trip.

I drove into a body shop in Oakland CA this morning and found a very nice white 250 SL that was near completion of a nine year restoration.  It is owned by the shop owner so the paint and body were very nice.  The owners partner said it will be for sale and that they had it appraised by "Interstate Appraisers" for $36,000 (I saw the report) and plan to sell at $28.000.  (Does anyone know this company and where thier appraisals fall?)   According to her it is completely rust free.  Oh yes, four speed manual.  She said they just don't drive it much and that she doesn't like all the attention!  For example, the last time they drove it out to eat, they returned to ten or so gazing eyes hovering about the car.  Unlike many here who don't mind the attention (at all) it makes her very uncomfortable.  The owner was not in but I'll be back to pick up our family car and find out more.

A white 230SL or early 250SL, top down passed in front of the Lincoln Mercury dealership where I work on Saturday afternoon, turning left off of Rt. 7 onto Spring Hill Road.  If he had glanced to his left he would have seen my Pagoda parked out front.  One of my co-workers spotted the car just before I did and remarked that he had never seen two of those in one blink of an eye before!

Coming back to Washington from the mountains on Thursday afternoon in my wife's 20 year old XJ-6 I spotted a Pagoda ahead on I-81 near Strasburg.  We both turned off onto I-66 and I was able to catch up to it.  Turns out it was a black 230SL with black interior and West Virginia Antique plates, top-down, purring like a kitten, and a very contented looking fella behind the wheel on one of the prettiest days we've had all month.  We paced each other for a while until I had to peel off for fuel.

Heading back to Connecticut from Millbrook NY, I turned onto route 22 north and there was a nice pagoda heading south, top down, beautiful Sunday afternoon in July (8th).  The car could have been  the same color as mine (white grey) but not sure.  I gave the guy driving the biggest thumbs up I could muster.  Made me really think about getting mine up North one summer. Much nicer driving roads than in South Fla.

Christopher,

I just moved from south Florida to western Massachusetts and as much as I am NOT looking forward to winters here, I would have to agree that the driving on the backroads of MA and CT is a great improvement over the straight flat (boring) roads that I had become accustomed to!

That's a coincidence; I was also on Park and 65th last night! And watched the uproar from the steam pipe blast ...

A dark maroon 280SL with matching hartop came by me in the opposite direction on Tyco Road in Tyson's Corner this afternoon about 3:30.  I think it may have had chromed bundt-cake alloy wheels.

I was at the Mercedes dealer yesterday in Paramus. As I was leaving, they were bringing a 280SL onto the showroom floor. I asked one of the salesman if it was for sale or show. He told me it was for sale. It belonged to the owner of Prestige Motors. I was told, later in the day, it was most likely sold already. The owner was asking $40,000 for it.

Hi guys,

Motoring up Lago Maggiore, stopped just before the CH border on a cool leafy terrace overlooking the lake for lunch.  Halfway into the Parma ham and fresh buffalo mozzarella and before the spaghetti vongole, a red blur passed on the two-lane winding road along the lake.  We were able to identify it as a Pagoda, but not which model.  Any Italian or Swiss member?

This morning, I went to visit a friend. To my absolute astonishment, I saw the most amazing sight!  There were dozens of Pagodas, all parked side by side, lining his entire yard as far as the eye could see!

Then I remembered I was at Joe Alexander's fabulous gathering of Pagodenfiles in Blacklick!  :D

Hi Guys(and I now use that term loosely, as we have at least 2 more girls on the forum),

Lovely warm evening yesterday, motoring in the Jag from Zofingen to Engelberg CH.  With the Alps in sight, we passed a blue topless 230 Automatic; looked in good nick, and the couple inside seemed to be enjoying themselves.

It's amazing to look at these posts and think how many of these beauties are being loved!

MB Queensland Club had its concours yesterday (Sunday) down by Moreton Bay.
There were 3 Pagodas for judging with 3 others on Display.
One of the judged Pagodas took out best car of show.
It was a beautiful nut and bolt, back to bare metal restoration.

Throughout the day various cars cruised bye but one of the most beautiful was a gold 1968 280SL with its top down.

I handed out this clubs' cards to the owners and potential Pagoda owners.

Owner of one of the judged Pagodas told me he had 4 genuine offers in the price range $75-90K to buy his car

I did the Helmingham Classic Car show yesterday

http://www.helmingham.com/eventsasp2.asp?ID=14

A very good day out. Saw just 2 other Pagodas. A '67 230 in cream with black hardtop on. Owned in the same family for over 30 years and in need of the expensive kind of love... the other a mid-1970 280 in a metallic light blue (not 906, I don't think) with parchment. A daily driver, which is always nice to see, especially when in such fine fettle

A good day out. Lotus were out in force, as were the TRs and was thinking it might be good to try do a visit there next year "en masse"

I have seen VERY few on the road which is surprising since I drive all over Ventura County and San Fernando Valley.
Even at the local informal car shows the Pagoda is rare, and exciting. The *3* I saw last week at the Village Coffee Roasters car show were all  1970 280 SL:
Beige with burgundy leather (chipped paint over wheel wells/owner not too friendly (sigh))
Gold with caramel leather- beautiful restoration, purchased restored/VERY friendly owner/great guy
Silver with red leather (didn't get a chance to meet owner)
I saw a silver very rare *right hand drive* 280 SL close by my house last year and tried to follow it home, but didn't want to scare the owner LOL!
I'd love to see that one again.

Last night driving to dinner I spotted a black 230SL parked in front of a shop. I pulled right in and started oogling and the shop owner came out and said I was looking at the only car not for sale. The strange part is it is the same body color as mine 040 black, it seems to be a very rare color. It is also the same model year, except later, as it has the flasher switch on the dash not under the dash. I noticed right away the front of the hood didn't line up and sure enough the shop had done a body resto about 5 years ago. I noticed it didn't have the little bumps on the front fenders where it meets the headlight chrome. I inquired if they had repaired the spot and the shop owner said they used all new MB body panels and the notches weren't there. I let him know this is a sure way of telling if these cars had been repaired. I gave him my card to give to the owner, maybe he/she is on this site. Or I could get another sicko fanatic for our group. It is still strange to see my cars almost exact match one town away, what odds. They had a perfect 51 Lincoln convertable, a fully restored, to the tune of $21,000, 1951 Crosley station wagon, what a nice little car, and due to a divorce it has an $8000.00 asking price, if anyone is interested I can get the owners info. I will drive my 230SL over later next week to show off, my poor old original paint, Peacock abused almost perfect running version.

Finally... I was starting to feel deprived. Took a little spin this morning and passed "Pagoda Sam" in his little red 280SL near Alta Sierra. He gets a point too -- as he proudly waved back.
