2nd Gear for Manual Gearbox
« on: April 26, 2025, 13:35:32 »
Hi All,

I thought I’d ask the group to find me the part number for the 2nd Gear main shaft helical gear out of a 68 280 Getrag G72 Box.

It has 35 teeth.

The reason I’m asking such a vague question is the part number being provided by a reputable vendor appears to be for a 4cyl vehicle, even though it’s listed as a 280 part.

I’d like to see what part number people come back to me with as so far it seems a little elusive for me.

I’m currently rebuilding a 280 box to go into my 230 and some of the dog teeth on this gear are a little chipped. It appears to have been running the wrong oil for quite some time.

Looking forward to people’s answers.

Thanks all

Doug

Hi Doug, I'm looking at the hard copy of the dealer parts manual and see two numbers for that part: 110 262 04 12 and 110 262 06 12. There are apparently two different versions (which I don't understand) but in both cases the part numbers apply to all versions; 230SL, 250SL and 280SL.

Hoping someone with real expertise can weigh in here and confirm.  Good luck, Lee

For A 110 262 04 12 - 35 teeth, 2nd gear
- installed in 113 042, 1103 043 and 113 044
- As of gearbox 042 011320

A 110 262 06 12 is shown on parts lists in the same places as 04 12, no differences, same notes.

Thanks for the responses.

Niemoller has one listed as 110 260 01 19, which I think out of a 4cyl box.

This was the reason why I was asking.

It’s seems I can’t find one for love nor money, so I will just have to fit my “slightly worn” 2nd gear back in.

Thanks again.

Not really...

I have no idea what is the difference between A110 260 01 19 and A 110 262 04 12. The description of the first is "gear with thread teeth" (whatever that means), description of the latter "35 teeth, 2nd gear".

A 110 260 01 19 was used on cars with 6 cylinder engine, e.g. M129 and M130:

W 108 014, 108 015 (M129), 108 016 (M130), 108 018 (M130), 108 019 (M130)

Also on W109, W110, W111, many versions.

It is available at Mercedes for ca $130-150. Always check availability at Mercedes - you may be surprised.

Thanks Pawel.

You say $130-$150 from a dealer, but in Australia by the time everyone adds their margin, it’ll probably be closer to $600.

If you think that’s a good number for a 6cyl box, then I’ll probably have to order it from Niemoller.

Does anyone else have any thoughts/comments/experience?

Check the price with the dealer first.
How do you think Niemoeller gets it? Then you will have shipping and any taxes and duties that may apply.

On application to 6 cylinder engines - that is what the catalogue is saying.

Thought I’d update this thread.

I’ve ordered the 2nd Gear 1102600119 from a local dealer. It’s ended up costing me $300AUD, but I know it’s an original part.

I’ve also ordered the 2nd gear split roller bearing as it’s still available from Mercedes and was the only bearing my local bearing supplier could not source, they couldn’t even source the individual rollers due to them being an odd size. That was more expensive about $400, but it was roughly what I would’ve paid for a reproduction one from any European supplier.

I was able to source the 1st, 3rd and 4th gear roller bearings from a local bearing supplier for the massive sum of $55AUD. I also ordered from them the 4 case roller bearings which they had in stock and they only set me back $90AUD.

I have the aftermarket part numbers for all of them except the 2nd gear split bearing so if anyone is interested I’ll post them here.

In regards to the overall cost of the bearings, I’ve saved myself well over half the amount of what the likes of Niemoller/SLS and Oldtimer were charging for the bearing sets.

Hello Doug,

I would very much appreciate it if you could post the aftermarket part numbers as I may be in need of them.

Thanks in advance, Lee

Hi All,

As promised these are the bearing numbers for a 1968 G72 Gearbox out of a 280SL although I suspect they are all the same across the 3 models. I’m sure someone will chime in if I’m incorrect.

Case bearings (I copied all the numbers off the side of the boxes)

Main Shaft - NSK 6306DDUNR*C3 NS7S 411
Countershaft - JTEKT 63052RSC3 GA2 02407

Total Cost was around $90 for the case bearings. If someone wants an exact price I’ll have to find the invoice as I paid cash.

Needle Roller Bearings

1st Gear - KT 35x42x20
3rd Gear - KT 35x40x30
4th Gear - IKO KT 162420 C3

Total Cost $55.46

I said earlier the only bearing I couldn’t source was the 2nd gear split roller bearing. I had to swallow my pride and order it from Mercedes. It’s part number is 1209810312

Hope this helps anyone who needs to rebuild their gearbox.
