Loose horn ring
« on: March 18, 2022, 15:13:13 »
Hi Guys,
Please help. I have a loose horn ring in my early 67 260SL and have no idea where the problem lies.  I can’t find anything in my manuals and not much in the forum.

How about this: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Electrical/Horns

if those rubber plugs are not enough, you just need another layer of gum or foam there.

There's a spring behind the horn ring. If it breaks or is missing the horn ring won't work.

I believe the horn ring has 4 springs spaced between the contact plate and the Bakelite housing.

That depends on whether it's an early or late 250. If it's early, it will have a regular spring. If it's late, it will look like what's pictured above.

With all due respect, I think it’s the other way around.
What you see is from a late 230 and I assume a early 250 will be the same.

What I see on parts lists:
1. On the drawings for W111 and W110 (attached) there is a spring A 111 993 24 01.
2. Same spring is not on the drawing but is in the parts list for W112.
3. The same spring is not on the drawing, but is on the parts list for 113042, with a note up to ident. no.: 042 010274. This is the same chassis number when the contact ring was changed and the steering wheel was changed.
4. Not on the drawing, but on the parts list for 113043 there is a spring A 116 993 51 01 or A 116 993 55 01, BUT note says it is only for the older type of the steering wheel (!). Same goes for 113044.

Could be. They're definitely not the same.

That's the coiled spring I was referring to. The contact plate is a different part and I don't believe it keeps the horn ring from flopping around.

This is my parts book. I don’t see the spring.
Again, late 230 and just assuming early 250 is the same.

As I wrote, not on the drawing, but in the parts list for 113042 up to chassis no. 042 010274. Your late 230SL may not have this spring. 10274 chassis is in the middle, I guess. If your VIN is higher, you will not have it, if lower and nothing was modified, you should have it.

There are a number of parts used on our cars that are not in the parts books. Not like MB would ever do that.   ;)

Indeed!

Being in the EPC I can say - they are in the parts lists, but missing from drawings, particularly for W113.

I have noticed, that A LOT of parts are missing from the drawings of the steering, particularly the late type. I was really puzzled when I worked on my steering column in 280SL and was looking for the bearings. I see now that also for the early style you have to go to W110, W111 to see the parts on the drawings, not only in parts lists.

You have to do the same with workshop manuals. Want to know how to place the rings on a 280SL piston? Go all the way back to the 190 workshop manual to find that. I guess MB expected their mechanics to already know this stuff and only entered new information as needed.

I recognize this is a year old thread, but I have encountered the same issue with my early 250SL.  The sloppy chrome horn ring was causing the horn to beep on its own.  Here's a fix that worked. The steering wheel and chrome horn ring were removed.  Then a 16mm length piece of 10mm ID electrical wiring heat shrink tubing was cut and slipped over the two nubs that fit through the steering wheel arm. After heating the shrink the tubing until it was tight, the horn ring was refitted and the errant horn beeping stopped. The chrome horn ring was still slightly sloppy, although I wasn't overly concerned since the beeping issue was cured. Applying another layer of shrink tubing is an option to tighten it more if necessary.

Hi Eric,
Thanks for the heads-up via personal message.
I only noticed your recent post, with the advice, this morning. I somehow recall that is how I fixing my loose horn ring. (heat shrink around the spring)
Much appreciated.
