Hard Top restoration parts
« on: March 04, 2022, 18:14:22 »
Hello All, am finally in process of restoration of a used hard top that I picked up a few years ago. I’m in the process of striping the headliner and removing the trim and glass. Most of the screws on the trim have come off without much trouble (as usual there is always one lone one not willing to give). My question is, I’d like to replace thr sheet metal screws due to their age and condition). I see that the technical manual gives a part number for the various screws, but when I check online, there are no reference numbers or vendors that show availability. Does anyone know if those screws are still available or a replacement?

Re: Sheet metal screw, part 007 982 002 212, need 40 per top
Sheet metal screw, part 007 982 003 215, need 40 per top

Thanks for your help, Mark

Mark,
Authentic classic has a general screw list including hard top on their web side. If you cannot find it, PM me with an email and I can send it to you.
However, I wouldn't buy screws (in larger quantities) from the common vendors due to price.
If you know what you need, I like Bellmetric. They have almost everything at reasonable prices.

I went to a boat repair place and found that they had a sorts of small stainless screws that worked nicely.

None of the screws on the hard top are visible when done so stick to stainless. They won’t rust to the frame like the originals. You can get every thing you need at Home Depot or lows pretty cheap. Most is what you will
Need are #4’s at 3/8”s and half inch plus some 6’s. Just match them up with what you took out. The hardest thing to find will be the short machine screws that hold the window seal rail to window posts. Those need to be real short or they will dig into the quarter window glass. I had to go to two big box stores to find those.

Further to John's post, I've looked (admittedly not very hard) to find a conversion chart for SAE to Metric screws. Obviously wont work for machine screws but always thought many SAE sheet metal screws would work in a pinch. I too use Bel-metric but sometimes for a single application, driving over to local hardware store would save time and shipping cost.  Lee
