Car covers
« on: March 02, 2022, 02:20:11 »
I’m looking for a good indoor car cover.  The car is always garaged when not in use. I take it out once or twice a week.  Priorities are that it fits well, is easy to put on or take off, doesn’t harm the paint and keeps the dust and dirt off.  Although I’m willing to pay top dollar, I don’t want to pay for things I don’t need.

There are many available  but I’m sure some are much better for my specific use.  I’m certain other members can point me in the right direction.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

I bought a cover from cover craft that is smooth as silk. Form fit. Expensive but if you want the best that really is the best for indoors. https://www.covercraft.com/us/en/product/covercraft-custom-form-fit-car-cover.FF-CCFF?gclid=CjwKCAiApfeQBhAUEiwA7K_UH7MLkbfDuPkEptMSQnnCD1dn5g7z7YRBx5_z9Ca_Lcy6SWcIlBgMchoCKocQAvD_BwE

Here is a You Tube going over the finer details. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_HLDX6LBCNc

I have this on my Roadrunner and the paint is a very high quality. So clear is the finish that you will see scratches in the paint if you rub your fingers over the paint. I think this car cover is a good match for the paint. My two Mercedes don't have near that high of quality paint (yet) and so I use less expensive covers on them now. One day when I repaint, I will use this covers on them. You do still have to be careful how you remove and install a car cover else you will pull dirt across the paint and cause scratches.

Would like to have one too, but have not yet found one custom fit for a W113. I have an old one, that I bought in Germany in the early 80s which was made for the Pagoda and it is falling apart.

Covercraft shows to have one for the W113 according to their site. $515.00. I discovered these from a car collector that has REALLY nice cars and uses this cover. Again, not cheap.

I’ve been purchasing custom covers for my outdoor teak furniture from a company called The Cover Store.  It carries the best standard and customized outdoor furniture covers I’ve been able to find.  They offer customized Covercraft car covers too and I’ve been eyeing the specific one mentioned by Wallace. It seems to tick all the boxes for my application.   It’s supposed to be tailored to a 280SL with the option of 1 or two outside mirror pouches.  It’s a little less than $500.  I think I’m going to opt for it.

Find out if they have one specifically tailored for the 230SL.  The early gooseneck mirror places the bulk of the mirror in a slightly different position relative to the windshield than the later mirror so the pocket might be a few inches off (which may or may not bother you - but an expensive fitted cover should look fitted when it is in place).

Not sure about Covercraft, but most car cover companies have "pocket kits" that they can send you for your cover. The way it worked for another cover company was that they sent you the full car cover and the "kit". Then you marked where you wanted the pocket and sent it back. They then sewed it on and sent it back. My W111 needs the hood ornament pocket as well as the side mirror.

I purchased a custom fit car cover from coveritcanada.ca in 2018 for $296.99 Canadian dollars.  It was an Evolution Block-it all weather custom fit cover product number 3103549. They were very good to deal with. Product came on time and as advertised.  I have attached a picture.

Hope this helps

If you haven't made your decision yet....

I have a Covercraft on my 230 SL but my last two indoor cover purchases for my S63 and NSX were Coverking satin stretch covers purchased through Auto Anything.  They have a somewhat limited choice for color combos vs. the Coverking website but usually offer some type of additional discount.  Check out their website banner at the top for an additional discount code, or just call them.

Good luck with your purchase.

I'm not understanding the need for a custom cover fit?  If it's stored indoors there should be little air movement so what is wrong with a cover that is sufficient to wrap around and below the front and rear bumper and long enough to extend past the rockers?  You can get 6 layer indoor covers that fit over/wrap the car without touching the ground for less than $100.

Bought mine some years ago from California Car Cover (https://www.carcovers.com/covers/cars/mercedes-benz/280-sl-534/1970/convertible.html). Works just fine: fits well, easy to take on and off, doesn't harm the paint. If you insure with Hagerty, there's even a discount.

Len, I received a Covercraft Formfit cover for Christmas.  I haven’t had a chance to put it on the car yet, but seems to be of high quality. The mirror “pockets” are sewn onto the cover. The only do-it-yourself it is the whole for the antenna. I have tried that get but the instructions are pretty straightforward. The material is very fleece-like.
