Inside the soft top boot is a black "tex" covering.  It appears to have a pebble like finish. Is this as it should be or could it possible be smooth vinyl or something else.

Assuming its original, being fifty-six years old, mine has become wrinkled from failing glue etc.  Replacing it, I would like to use the proper finish vinyl.  and that should be...

No padding in my 230SL and my 280SL.
The original vinyl is NLA but the vinyl used on Porsche Targa roofs is very close.

My 64 230sl had bitumen type sound deadening under it on the bottom (horizontal) surface but not the back.
