Hard top seal
« on: March 20, 2020, 23:02:58 »
I’m restoring my 250sl California.
Cannot find the right rubber seal that goes on the body and the hard top sits on it.
Bought a new one but it is too thin. There is a gap between the body and the hard top.
I have taken 2 photos of my car before and after.
Can anyone help to resolve this.
Greatly appreciated.

The pictures are too low-res to see that properly.

The reason is that you have got a RHD car  'California model' (code 41/7) car - everything different there.

Well,
the seal that goes around the body towards the cabin facing the rear seat bench is different on California cars (code 41/7) than on regular softtop compartment cars, it's upposed to be a bit larger.
There's s a special parts number for that one ... (can't find it currently).

Have to look further ...  ???

Achim
Thanks for a quick response.
I will appreciate if you could give me any further information.
I have tried the usual suppliers from Germany and Belgium.
See if you could get me any information about this seal.
Thanks

Bali, if you have no luck from Buds Benzs, ill will give you a little help.
You know now the size seal you require,as you said you already purchased one ,but was to small.
Over a time of 30 years i owned about  12 Buicks, Cadillacs, and other foreign makes and models, many convertibles,
and many classic makes and model seals from one make of car will often fit another make,  example Fiat spider ,some fit
Alfa Spider,. Cadillac some will fit Buick and Oldsmobile.
One of the best sources for  all classic cars is a company called ,--Steele Rubber Products,www.steelerubber.com
out of Denver ,NC. 845-462-5959 go on line, and check out Cadillac first, especially there trunk seals, i think you need about
14mm x 20-25mm and with small lip that you require i think, you will know when you take a look ,as steele has close photos and sizes, and they will even send you free small
samples.
They have thousands of  seals, another good source is---Old buick parts---they are out of New Jeysey also hundreds of seals
to select from, both very good reliable companys that have been around for years.
About 1988 to 1994  i spent over $ 2500 from Steeles Rubber  seals.----regards.

Bali...,
(Since you asked me...)
It could be this one here
but I am not absolutely confident about:

A113 750 0377 sealing frame

Can't give you currently any recommendation as to buy it or not.
The A113 750 0177 is the regular (softtop compartment lid) seal,
this here is another one that's not used on "usual"/"ordinary" (= non- 41/7) cars.
You may want to try that one. Good luck!

It looks quite likely SLS offers what you are looking for "Seal, 4-Seat-113, body underneath hardtop", they just call California Coupe a "4 seat".

But if you can get it from MB, as Achim shows, then I would definitely get it from MB. Maybe you can make the arrangement with the dealer that you can return it if it is not this piece. And I checked it is available from the dealers.

The EPC says this part (A113 750 0377) is in rear seat bench section, no picture there, I enclosed what I found in the system. "Rama uszczelniająca" is sealing frame.

Bali,
Did you find the seal? If so, please let me know as I am dealing with the same concern.
Thank you.

Thanks Achim
That’s the right part no.
I had the seal delivered today from Belgium.
What a relief. It is about 3 times thicker.
Bud’s Benz have it as well. Cost £ 300.
Cali as you are in USA best to get it from Bud’s Benz. It is for $ 300.

Thanks all for help.

Wait a minute......300 Pounds for this seal?! That's $372 USD.   Something isn't right.  I don't doubt what you're telling us...but I am losing trust in almost everyone we buy parts from for charging too much.  So very sad.  It's not right to take advantage of people.

It was something above EUR 250 at Mercedes. If you buy rubber - buy it from Mercedes. Why would you look for it on the other side of the pond? I am just curious.

Yes, Aaron, you are right.
It's too  much for such a part but what will you do?  :o
I remember there are parts (sheet metal) which I bought 30 years ago, those were 1/8th of the today's rates...
Ridiculous. :( >:(
On the other side ..., nobody (of us) is forced to buy at the MB dealer, we just do. ::)
We are comfortable, that's all. In the old(er) days (almost) everything was available new from Mercedes and we became fastidious...,
nowadays our cars are 50 years old and we can count ourselves happy that so many parts are still available for our cars...
Not so for (instance for) Opel, Audi, Volkswagen... :-X :-[

The aftermarket is nowadys getting stronger and stronger ... and also with improving quality. Not always but more often. :D
That surely keeps our cars on the road
but it is by far no low-priced hobby anymore...  ???
And this not only holds true for the SLs and (W111) SE's and so,
it's true for all the older MB passenger cars... :'(

Reflective...,

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I can't understand why such a part is deemed so costly. Granted, I realize this seal is a unique part, and that demand is pretty low.  I guess beggars can't be choosers.  :/

Aaronh, I see you also own a 600. I just bought a windhsield seal for my 600. List was $820. Makes W113 parts seem nit so bad.

Very simple to answer that sir, these seals are made in very low quantities cause of the small demand on the market.

If they would be produced by 10.000 pcs at a time instead of 1000 for example the retail price would be 1/3 of what it is now. It would take decades to sell all of them and no manufacturer is going to eat that upfront cost.

It's pretty sad when the seal costs more than a new windshield.  It looks like you paid full retail for the seal.  Wholesale cost for the seal is around $578.  A new glass retails for $472.
