Power steering Installation 1965 230 sl
« on: September 08, 2019, 23:46:20 »
Would anyone have a schematic of a power steering system or power steering parts schematic for  a 1965 230 SL.  any general information you can offer for installation would be helpful.  My 1965 230Sl came w/out P/S.  I now have most parts to install one.  Pictures from a parts book or service manuel would be helpful.

Do you have the power steering column from a 230SL? Nothing else will work.

Jim Villers did an extensive write-up on this subject years ago when he added PS to his 230SL. You may be able to search up his posts. In his case he had his original steering column cut and shortened then welded. The steering shaft is the tough part to source in the puzzle.  Alfred Esser's 230SL, in his case he found a new PS steering shaft.

Attached is a Service Information (technical service bulletin) regarding the the installation of power steering in a 230 SL from December, 1964.

Added to tech manual here: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Steering/Start under Maintenance

mBdrvr Great.. I've added the two attachments as a single PDF to the Tech Manual here: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Steering/Start

To conserve space I am deleting them from your post...

I acquired a 5 volume set of "Service Information" technical service bulletins from the 60's and 70's. Although many of them are for other models, there are many that relate to W113 and W111 vehicles. I also have a two volume set for "Special Tools".

Quite valuable. A lot that information is not even in the BBBs.

mBdrvr - Paul,

if there are any that pertain to our cars... you'd do us a great favour if you scan them (to PDF) and https://wetransfer.com them to me (admin@sl113.org) and I can upload them to the Technical Manual and make them available for all (Full) members.

Great winter project!

Dear Peter,

I did not find on our side the BBB (in pdf).
Would this be possible for members?
Would be very nice!
Or is it there and I missed it.

Peter

I'll go through them and send the ones that pertain to the W113 and W111.

Peter, the BBB is not on our site (except for some small excerpts).

The reason is that MB Classic Center still sells it Werkstatthandbuch ab Baujahr 1968, W 108 - 113 (deutsch), it is copyrighted, and Mercedes Benz would put us out of business quicker than you can say 'Bye Bye'.

That does not mean that you cannot find (illegal) CD's with badly indexed versions of this BBB on eBay. But we will, and cannot post them on the site.

Sorry to say this, but IMHO the BBB is quite useless for most jobs on our cars. I have both and cannot find much in either of them that I can't find a better explanation for in a Haynes or on-line.

The TSB’s (Technical Service Bulletins) would be of great interest. There were factory authorized modifications done by dealers to cars in order to solve issues. Some of these could be interpreted by a judge or restorer as being “incorrect” when in fact they should be allowed. Case in point is the rubber buffer strips added to the rear chrome on the trunk sill and tail lights on later cars. My 250 has had these buffers for as long as my family has owned the car since early 80’s even though it is an “incorrect” modification. I believe there was a MB TSB to address water intrusion by adding these to earlier cars when a complaint was made. Would be nice to see it!

I will copy the TSB's to PDF format. It will take some time however.
