Help wanted with data from 230 SL 1965
« on: September 12, 2018, 15:40:53 »
Hi there,
I'm about to buy a 230 SL from 1965 but I'm not so familiar yet with the Pagode data, can I get some help here?
What do the numbers mean on the plate on the picture?
How is this plate called anyway?

I also have some papers with the car including the data card, the same as version 1 on this page:
https://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/DataCards#DataCardVersion1
The "Fahrgestell-Nr." is 113042-10-012817.
So the 113042 and the 10 on the plate are clear.
As I understood well, the 332 G are the color codes for the car and hardtop, which are dark blue indeed.

The number of the engine is the same as the one at the data card.

At the options box of the data card "wenig gewuenscht" is a code 720.
Anyone know what that means?
Thank you in advance!

Again something else.

Just quickly: the plate you are showing is called Body and Paint Number Plate and is described here:

https://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/BodyandPaintNumberPlate

You do not have the VIN number on it. You have the first 8 digits of the VIN only, the rest is production number. The last digits of the number at the bottom right should be stamped on the hood (inside, top left corner), hard top, soft top and the transmission mount under the car.

Vin is to be found on the plate on the right hand side of the firewall and on the frame under the air filter tube to throttle. Described here: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/VIN

Your first 8 digits of the VIN say it is a 230SL, LHD, Manual.

720 - soft top black, you have it here: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/OptionCodes

OK thank you.
I also have a picture of the plate with the VIN number, the same as on the paper.

VIN on the plate is one thing, but you need to check the VIN on the frame under the air filter pipe. Get a piece of cloth, clean the place and check it for correct numbers and no traces of any welding nor polishing.

The plate with VIN costs EUR 20 on ebay. Anybody can stick it there.

Please look through the buyer's guide: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Buying/Start

There are a lot of things to be checked. I think: legality, rust, completeness are the top 3 points.

To add to what Pawell said the number plate on the body only shows options that effect the way the body was built and not the entire options list.  For example if your car was outfitted with an antenna it would be listed on that plate because they needed to drill a hole in the fender for an antenna but sonething like a special rear axle gear set would not be on the plate because it didn't effect the way the body was fitted out before paint.
