So what are your other bucket-list cars?
« on: November 17, 2017, 03:52:11 »
We've probably all seen the commercial on TV on what is your next dream car. What other cars are on your bucket list?

As discussed in another recent post mine has always been an E-type and an jaguar 140 or 150. I wanted a 190 at one time, but I am afraid I would be disappointed compared to my pagoda. I would love to find a couple of these as project cars now to restore when I retire Hopefully ten years from now. Reality is that will never happen. I can afford salting away a few project cars, but not how much my wife will want to spend in in return. My Pagoda, while bought at a very reasonble value, has indirectly cost me a fortune! All that said, if you can only have one at any price, its hard to beat a pagoda.

Whats on your bucket list?

Alfred,
the car on your pic is a 507 ...; an Elvis's car.  ;)
It also says that (numbers it) on the licence plate ... ;D :D

The one pictured below is a 503 - a true Gentleman driver's car !

Especially in this color it will suit you very well .  ;D ;D

...and ..., even more positive,
you can name it as "56andBlue" then. :D

Did you know that Paul Bracq styled the bar at the Automobile Club du Sud Ouest in Bordeaux, in the style of the Facel-Vega? I stood behind the bar while the master himself snapped my photo...and yes, for those with an artistic eye, that is an original Bracq painting behind the bar. I believe it is of a 1938 Figoni et Falaschi Talbot-Lago, but I could be wrong.

My bucket list car? A 2005/6 Ford GT. Not in the color shown, but probably the Titanium.

Achim,
thanks for noticing my typo. I changed my post.
Actually I do like both models, the 503 and the 507. The American designer of these cars - Albrecht von Goertz - was certainly among the best in his profession.
Here is another 503 photo.

Are we talking bucket list cars like in cars you'd actually like to own before you die?  Don't know about you guys, but a few of these are way out of my price range.  Most bucket list items (a concept I actually find silly) are things that people feel they must do before they die and have a reasonable expectation to.

That said, I'm with Alfred on the 507, drop dead gorgeous.  Now, maybe a ride in one would be a possible bucket list item.

Achim,
it appears that the cheap Liebfraumilch you like so much is affecting your reading/comprehension skills! 🤣

When reading the Wikipedia article did you not notice that he died as an American citizen?? I am shocked!  :o

"...in 1936 he emigrated to the United States of America. He eventually moved to Los Angeles  …

Goertz joined the US Army in 1940 and served for five years. After leaving the Army he drove the Paragon to New York and while driving it he accidentally encountered Raymond Loewy, the famous car designer. Loewy invited Goertz to his office, sent him to college to learn about design and later gave him a job in the Studebaker studio in Indiana."

I forgive you.  ;)

Now, now Achim and Alfred...

Goertz was a naturalized U.S. Citizen, not a birthright citizen (like me and others born in the USA) and that's the distinction. I don't think anyone, Achim, would NOT call him an American after he obtained his citizenship, a right and privilege he accelerated by serving in the US Army. Being born in Germany, one could easily say he was German; later being a US Citizen, one would also call him an American. Thus, perhaps we should call him a true German-American, being born in Germany and a German citizen until that was relinquished upon his naturalized U.S. citizenship. Getting into the nuances here, a birthright citizen can't have their citizenship revoked; a naturalized citizen can under certain circumstances mostly having to do with either misrepresentation (intentional or otherwise) on the application or dishonorable discharge in the armed services.

One should note, though you have to read between the lines, that he immigrated to the USA in 1936, AND his mother's family was of Jewish heritage. Had he stayed in Germany, who knows what might have happened to him; throughout the 1930s things started to get very dicey for those of such heritage. Thankfully he did not stay, and we are all better off for the legacy he left behind with some of the most beautiful and iconic car designs.  His BMW 507 design is as lovely as the Pagoda--different, but beautiful. Right car at the wrong time.

Have coveted a 507 longer than I can remember ( Read   -- "The Impossible Dream" !!)  Saw a beautiful 503 , similar blue, on the road in the UK last year.   I think Goertz was also involved with the Datsun 240Z, but not really given credit ??

If I had the money, an Iso Grifo. Given that the car was concieved by Giotto Bizzarini, I would fit a Lamboghini V12 in it, as a tribute. What a car that would be!

Thanks a lot for the clarification, Michael. :)
I was also already thinking into the same direction (of explanation) but realized that I would touch "careful grounds" and better shut up here.
Again thanks a lot, Michael.

It's hard to do a bucket list with so many favorites.
As a practical minded one, it would be a utilitarian W114/W115 wagon by Binz.

For now it's what I want.

A few:

Having owned and driven several 600's I can tell you they're everything you might imagine. For such a large car they have very nimble handling, strong acceleration, and absolutely fantastic brakes. A marvel of technical excellence seldom matched or duplicated since the first one rolled off the line in 1963.

I'd be kind of happy with an L29 Cord or a Delehay.

My bucket list includes doing my Benz Dr. tour out west, down the coast to LA, over to Las Vegas, and back through Colorado or something interesting on my way home. I better go before I can't - health is not getting any better......

Dr Benz,
The L29 cord is my brothers favorite and some consider it the most attractive of the auburn/cord/duesenberg line-up. Have you ever been to auburn Indiana for the fall auburn/cord/duesenberg annual homecoming and auction? Its unbelievable. Well worth your trip south being an L29 fan.
