I see. I'd pass on this and go with fine line tape. I tried one of these things once but maybe the one I used was not the same type or quality. My painter hated it and the customer complained. Generous effort by the members though.

Dan,

It is a silicone rubber.  Any spray on it just wipes off.  Just a quick note on the stencil.  My painter opted to mask with tape, after a few tries with the stencil I provided.  At the tri star the stencil is quite deep, and hard to get the gun in there.  Just an FYI, but the painter I used masks all the time, so it could have been easier for them, and they said it took less time than re-doing the hubcap.

Usually a task done many times will require less time than learning a new technique.
But IMO for anyone who has never painted a hubcap the stencil may require fewer trials. Provided of course one can read and look and follow these  instructions:  ;)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kfH5JCapd4o#t=11

Note: The stencils (Type 4) shown in the video are for the one-piece wheel covers, they will NOT work with the two-piece covers, and the ones making the round here (Type 3) are not intended for one-piece covers.

I think these were one piece covers. I'm thinking my painter wasn't familiar with the stencil but then I remember not liking the look of it before we even used it. I can't remember if the customer supplied it or where we found it but it went into the trash can shorty after.
I've never had an issue with fine line tape. However, a lot depends on how careful the application is done because it does affect the quality. I do agree that you want to use as little paint as possible.

Just all be aware that it is the responsibility of the current user to post on to the next recipient and it appears at the moment that  it is usually about 6 weeks between each person on average so Mark you could be in for a six month wait or more and you may want to consider just taping the cap up.

We are working on reproducing stencils for the hubcaps soon and they are going to be made of hard plastic with a magnet in the middle. Not all hubcaps are made of steel so a piece of metal on the back will hold the stencil still for paint.

Babak,
Are these for the one-piece wheel covers ONLY or are you also planning to make them for the two-piece hub caps??
And are you having this fellow make them for you again? http://www.retroplastic.com/classic-car-parts.html

I have a new manufacturer I'm trying out.
The product is going to be high quality because the tool need to be precise.
I'm hoping to have them for early and late style hubcaps.

Hello all,
You can remove me from the list.  I sent the car out to a restoration shop (Gus in Houston) in March.  I'm assuming he will be painting my hubcaps  ;)

OK - it seems that the Pagoda Groups hubcap painting mask has been lost between chatntoo & Bonnyboy.

David (chatntoo) used the mask some time ago and sent it on the next person on the list which is Ian (Bonnyboy) but...guess what....Ian has NOT received the mask.

Can anyone shed any more light on this or do we forget it??

Hi--

I have the mask right now.

It is for the dog dish hubcap.

I will donate a mask for the full size wheel covers and send both to the next one on the list.

Please PM me with the name and address of the next recipient.
