Restoring a 1971 280sl with full size hubcaps and will need a painting mask for the hubcaps if someone has one or knows where I can find one...thanks.

The Group has one that passes around between the Full Members only. As it happens I have it at the moment and will be done in a couple of weeks. I am then passing it to another member in the USA who in turn would pass it to you. The rules that have been working is that who ever has it is responsible for postage to the next member.

Using tape is not that big of a deal, about 30 minutes a cap. Using flexible blue auto masking tape (not the 3M house painting blue tape) makes the curves reasonably easy to do. The 1/4" tape is exactly right for the circle bump around the star. The lines are crisper, but I will concede that is not how the factory ones look.

I had another member waiting on me for the Hub Caps Stencil but also last contact indicated that they may use masking..

I have lost the contact for that person so if they read this can they contact me by PM in the next couple of days if they want the Stencil.

Otherwise, I will send on to Davidl later next week as I have now completed my caps. If they then still want them then David can forward on.

I didn't know about the group stencil. Is there one for the smaller early hubcaps? I'm about to attack mine.

It was a stencil donated by a member several years ago after he had done his caps and it has been floating around the world between members.

You are able to use it, the only requirement is that it is your responsibility to advertise available on the Forum and to post it to the next member where ever he/she may be in the world. A bit of pot luck on the postage. I am sending it to USA next and as far as I know David, below post, is to be the next person unless I have adivce from another who has got lost in the fog.

Have just completed mine last night for my 230 in 350G.

It's best to use fine line tape which as another forum member mentioned takes 30 minutes a rim. For those who are on facebook you can go on the Mercedes Classic Center page and see that even the classic center uses fine line tape rather than the stencil.

Yep,

Some like originality and the original look that is slightly fuzzy and some like the modern sharp lines. Another example is the over spray in the wheels or underneath the car.

Bit like colour, everyone has a preference I guess, and there is no “best”

Meanwhile, stencil is on its way from Australia to John in Bolder CO and will then pass to David after that.

I just finished my 250SL wheels the old fashioned way with the tape. I think the result was very good. I was told that the stencil does leave the result more fuzzy.

They look nice and sharp but as I said in an earlier post, If you are going for originality then they dont cut it as the slightly fuzzy edges that a stencil gives cannot be reproduced with the taping method.

In my case I am trying to get my car as close to original as possible and thus used the stencil for one set of hubcaps and have a second set that I have taped for use on the car when I regularly drive it.

I havent yet been able to reproduce the paint blowby on the wheels and under the car that some have gone to great lengths to do.

The biggest problems with masking method, is you can get heavy paint build-up at the masking tape. The stencil prevents this. With the masking method, use just enough and not too much paint for best results.

When I did a couple of sets for a good friend of mine some years back, I was very careful to pull of the tape before it had dried too hard. The one thing that I remember needing to be very careful about was not touching the paint surface as I stripped the tape. I did not run a knife around the edges.

David,

How did it go with the painting. Did you master the art with out too many tries and strip backs?

It does take a bit to get it right. Took me two hubcaps (dog dish type) that I stripped the paint off before I got it right. I ended up taping the outer and used the stencil on the inner star. I think the art is to not spray to thick a coat each time and to ensure it gets into each corner of the triangle on the star.

I sure could use the stencil also. Painted mine last night with tape. Paint came out great...

Need to be re-done, and I'm now an expert on stripping them.
