Does the hinge mount right under the bottom flat piece that is secured by screws or is it mounted under the metal glove box?

Wrong info. :evil:

Hinge goes ABOVE glove box base. On RHD cars, the right end of the hinge has a raised section that the flex wire for the lamp in the door passes under!!
The hinge/box are held on the dash by 4 screws but there are 6 holes. The two smaller holes take rivets which hold the glove box and door together so that the spring/holders can be installed prior to fitting the assembly into the dash board.

Quick question on an issue related to the spring.    I found my hinge last night loose behind the dash but can't figure out how to reattach.   It consists of the spring with the two "wrench like" inserts that fit the mechanism well, but they don't stay attached.   Am I missing something else?

I appreciate any help or ideas.

Welcome Chris,

The wrenches need to be inserted side by side in each end of the spring.  There is a slotted protrusion on the side of the glove box and another on the glove box door.  The wrench ends are inserted into the slots and the spring remains straight.  The spring does not bend in the middle. Spring tension with the wrenches pushed outward by the spring keep the glove box door open and closed.

Be sure that the spring is in good condition. It should not be bent or extended. When I first pulled my glove box apart, I saw that the spring was mis-shaped and did not lie flat. It is critical that the spring be not deformed, twisted or bent. I found a replacement at the local auto parts store. It works like a charm.

Take the two "wrench" handles and put each of them into the holes/circles formed at either end of the spring so that the handles are inside the spring pointed towards one another like so.... ]-/////-[

Now squeeze them together by pushing on the wrench heads, compressing the spring until the handles overlap inside the body of the spring.  Now with the glovebox closed, insert the wrench ends ] into the slots in the hinge arms. The wrench handles should stay overlapped and the spring should stay compressed with the glovebox closed. Done correctly, there should be enough tension on the gloveboxe hinge to make it difficult to open when the glovebox is not attached to the car. If you are bending the spring or the wrench handles do not overlap you are doing something wrong.

Thanks.   Ya'll are awesome!   I've been down due to computer problems, but now that I'm back, you've helped immensely!

In this process, I've noted that there are no screws holding the glove box in place.   Does anyone know what size/type screws to use?   I'm also going to have to find screw holes since apparently they were covered in the recent reupholstery project.

Any ideas/thoughts are greatly appreciated.

My glove box is held in place by two screws on the top and four on the bottom. They are chromed and sit in thin (what looks like) aluminum cups through the MB-tex material.

Hello. I am resurrecting this one because I have questions about various dash screws.

Are the below-mentioned cups used in the upper screws of the glovebox as well? And what about the two black plugs in Douglas's picture? Are these correct? and available? anybody have a handful of cup washers???

I think the cup washers are called finish washers.  Available at good hardware stores that have a decent selection of fasteners (screws, nuts, bolts, etc.).

Thanks George. I did try a few of our local places and even bought some of the "finish washers". But the only ones they had are more rounded and the screw sits up high. The Pagoda washer seems to be more recessed, letting screw be almost flush with the vinyl. But I will keep looking...

Thanks GD. I'll have a look around. I guess I am just searching for some simple, fairly easy improvements to do this winter -- and my screws throughout the car are fairly mish-mashy. It would be nice to have a database here of just screws...part numbers & pictures or some such thing.
