Anyone with a car in 904G midnight blue?
« on: January 30, 2010, 05:16:37 »
I am starting to think about which color to pick for the 280SL and would like to see a few examples painted in 904G midnight blue.
Bob F.  brought his to the last two PUBs but I am wondering whether there are more examples out there. Especially if they have a different interior color than burgundy red.
Thanks!

Alfred  If you are trying to stay within the blue colors may I suggest med blue met or perhaps blue-gray 906 are both very nice.  The lighter blue 906 would be spectacular with its varying hues with the Cali sunsets. ;)

Thanks hauser,

I agree with Naj, my 250c is 904G, this color would look great on Pagodas, it brings all the lines on the car not to mention the front chrome grill and the red tail lights against the dark blue . If I had to choose a blue This would be it.

Alfred, Sportsleicht Restorations did a high level restoration in the color you are looking for.  The car looked spectacular with the dark blue with what appeared to be Roser tan interior.  Perhaps Bjorn may have pics of the car.

Hauser,
did it look like this one?
What soft top color would fit with the tan interior?

Naj and Paul, thanks for the pictures!

Similar but of course it was a fresh resto.  It also had an ivory steering wheel and Coker ww tires.  It was stunning.  As for the st I believe it was dark blue.

Alfred, didn't Naj post a drk blue photo recently?  http://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=11258.0  Country cousins.  Perhaps he has a few more,

Hi Alfred,

I believe this car is 904 midnight blue.  I saw it on Ebay back in May.  I love the dark blue cars with parchment interiors but you don't see many.

Chris :)

I have a midnight blue 1971 280SL with ivory / parchment interior.  I purchased it with this combination. It has a beige / ivory soft top.  Originially it was toacco brown with cognac interior unbeknownst to me.  A great restoration from years ago.  I think the color palate is very elegant.  Cheers.

Hi Zav,
can you post some pix of the beige soft top please? Haven't seen that combination yet and I am really curious.
How difficult is it for you to keep the light colored soft top clean?
Chris, thanks for the pix, I had missed that one.

Unfortunately I acquired the car at the end of this past summer and did not take photos of the soft top that I can share with you.  It is a different look than the dark blue soft top shown on the forum.   Sorry.

Alfred, here is a photo I managed to forward off the web.  Hope it gets "from point A to point B".  I'm not versed with alll aspects of techology!

Hi Alfred,

I have a light colored soft top and I can tell you they are a bugger to keep clean, not so much the day to day dust and dirt but if any rubber rubs or they rub whilst down and the cover closed, it is near impossible to remove the marks from the rubber or from the lid rubbing on it.  If I had my time again I would go with a darker soft top just so that it always looks ok.

Good point Garry and I'll keep it in mind for sure.
However, I must say the white and blue in the photo - thank you Zav - is appealing to an ex-Bavarian.  :)

Gentlemen,

All your suggestions have been "nice", however our car has a light grey interior (sorry , dont know the number) and the dark blue and grey make a "to die for" combo. Dark blue soft top.

Cheers

George,
please add a picture!
Here are some of the "Ausstattung" codes (box number 8 in the data card) for cars with 904G paint:
Code 242: 3000 red leather and 740 top (black 9001 fabric)
Code 245: 5000 blue leather and 744 top (dark blue 5010 fabric)
Code 247: 7000 gray leather and 742 top (light gray 7016 fabric) or 744 top
Code 251: 8000 beige leather and 740 top
Code 255: 8014 parchment leather and 743 top (parchment 8021 fabric) or 744 top
The different leather colors are shown here http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/UpholsteryCodes:

At this point I am tending to code 247  - but there is lots of time to change my mind.  :)

Alfred, didn't 904G replace 332G when the later models came out? Reason I ask is, I believe our beloved Pagoda by the Sea is a 230SL with 332...(as is my top by the way.) I might be mistaken about the change...

James that is correct, 332G was replaced by 904G (see: http://www.sl113.org/wiki/DataCard/PaintCodes) and they do look very similar.
But dialing the codes at the Glasurit web site they appear to have a slightly different paint composition.

This is a link to a car that was for sale years ago. The link still works.  The car is a 280se coupe in the color you inquired about. Scroll all the way down and the last picture is with it's stable mate pagoda in the same color.
