113 and red body color options.....
« on: August 27, 2009, 19:33:24 »
As I collect the parts needed for my comprehensive '71 restoration I'm seriously considering a color change.

I think I'll appreciate a red other than the original Signal red (w/Cognac interior).  In the late '70s I had a Porsche finished in Brocade Red (Brokatrot - L32A) with "saddle" interior.....IMHO, a stunning, rich color combination. I know this body color was utilized for both Porsche and VW/Audi. Apparently it was not part of MBs line up.

So, can any of you offer opinions on the other reds offered that are MB original colors and perhaps period correct?
Better yet, feel free to post a pic of your red car for inspiration.

Here's a very nice possibility: http://www.retroclassic.com/english/fahrzeuge.html

I agree.  That does look very nice.  If you scroll down you can see more pics of that car.  It could be the camera and/or lighting, but in the other pics the paint doesn't seem as deep or dark. The homepage photo is probably touched up a bit.

They say the paint is 571 which would be like this one in the wiki towards the bottom of the page.

Chan, I agree on the code. In 2 of the pics it seems to be similar to the Brocade color I love so much. However, it is a metallic which I'll likely not get involved with.

If anyone has a 571 colored car please post pics.

If you prefer a non-metallic then what about 576G?

My 1971 280SL is 576G Deep Red...

Photo below makes it look lighter but it actually looks almost like a maroon.

Ed and John,

Your cars look beautiful. That Dark Red is very similar to the Brocade Red I speak of.

John: Is that Signal Red? it appears to be quite a bit darker than my car. Perhaps my faded finish is throwing me off.

Depends on the light.  The sun was going down and not directly on the car.

Yes, signal red, and here are two other pictures.  One from the 37 year owner (w/hardtop) and another in the sun from the next owner (3 months).

This car is 576G colour code. i would say that these pictures reproduce the colour pretty accurately. I find the colour changes in the sun more red. When not sunny, more Maroon as Ed says.

This looks very similar to the Brocade Red I remember...at least on my monitor.

Anyone with a 573G car? Burgundy Red?

Hello Rick,

Yes, my car is 573G "Dunkelbordeauxrot" (dark Bordeaux red).
It's dark red, darker than 576 or its predecessor color code 516H.
It's a (dark) wine red with a touch of maroon (to brown).

However,
this color code is not original for your car but was only available until 1965.
It was succeeded by 542 "dark red" which is quite similar but a little more puple and not so brownish like my 573. Personally, I like the 542 a little bit more.

Sorry please for the extremely bad quality of the pic.

Best,
Achim

Hello Doug,
please post a few more pictures of your car in the "Photo Gallery" board.  It is too nice not be enjoyed in more detail.  :)

HI,
Here is my car (just purchased last week)  The data car indicates this is 571 RED.  The data plate indicates the body should be 571 RED and the hardtop 040 BLACK.  I intend to correct that as I restore the car.  The color changes dramatically depending on the lighting.  inside it looks Cinnamon like but in the bright sun it is quite red.  The current picture was taken in the former owners garage.  I had it towed to a mechanic to get here running again.

Hi Kyle - definately paint the roof black, and make sure you paint the hubcaps to match - it will look awesome, and get it back to the orginal spec!  I think the two-tone is one of the best attributes of these cars in their times.

I also like the fact the Mini-Coppers of today have brought back that feature - we also have one of those - blue with a black top!

Doug,
I totally agree about the two tone!   I too love the Mini's with the two colors.  Your car looks beautiful.  Mine is a 67 250 as well, what is your paint code?  Mine is 571, I don't know of many any others this color.  I wonder how close they are in production number?  Does yours have powersteering and or AC?
