location of Plug Connection Tail Light Leads (46)
« on: March 05, 2009, 04:25:26 »
For a 280 SL, can anyone tell me the location of the "Plug Connection Tail Light Leads" (#46) as shown on the wiring diagram?
It's too cold in my garage to snoop around for it. Mine is an early model year '70, if that matters.
Thank you,
Mark

I think the connector is located on the inside of the panel behind the driver seat. - the carpeted panel that has the handle for opening the soft top cover.

The tail light harness breaks out of the main dash board harness at plug #46. This plug is located above the left kick pannel in front of the door. the harness goes from the plug then down under the chrome door sill moulding then through a frame rail under the top boot then into the trunk. Plug 46 is the only connection for this harness that is outside of the trunk.

My lost post simply thanked Al for his description and picture.
Thanks again.

Does anyone know why MB installed the small string around the base of the front wire harness connector?
My w113 is a '71 and also has this string around the base.  ???

My guess would be its a mouse - what you see is one end of the string. The other runs through the tunnell/ box section where the loom runs.  Uncle Merc left it there in case other wires had to be run later. ie find the other end of the bit of string (where you want the wire to end up), untie the entry end, tie it to your new wire and away you go. Dont forget to tie a new bit of sting to it so you can pull it back for use next time.

Either that or Hans on the assemble line was a bit of a practical joker so he tied it there so someone in 45 years time would wonder what it was for. ;D

Cheers
