Removing indicator stalk
« on: July 16, 2025, 22:05:10 »
Hello,

I want to replace the indicator stalk of my car but problem: the connector of the stalk doesn't pass between the columne shaft and the casing. It's a matter of either removing the connector casing (and riking a mistake in the location of the wires... or removing the shaft fromthe casing... which doesn't seem that easy.
Has one of you been confronted to that?
What does he (she) suggest in such occasion?
Didier.

The electrical connector can be passed through the steering column although I confess that I remove the cover off the connector which makes it easier.  Yes, you will have to make sure you get all the wires back in the right position. The tech manual has a write up (https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Electrical/SteeringColumnSwitch) that includes what you will need to get the wires back in the correct slots of the connector.

Take a couple of pictures of the connector with wires in, dismantle, pass through and put together as per the picture. Will take you 10 minutes.

12pin connector from 230SL switch does NOT fit through steering column. It needs to be taken apart.
On late version, 250/280 12 pin connector does fit through.

Just removed the cover of the connector and replaced It with bit of adhesive tape so I could push gently the pins without fully removing them… and it did work! Without fear of mixing wires. Sometime you need more than one brain, I’m glad I raised the question here, many thanks to you all!

(Car is a 280, so late connector)
