What's this cable...
« on: February 16, 2008, 08:01:07 »
I have a cable running from the firewall (RHS, upper) across the top of the firewall and then heading forwards. It joins a unit on the top of the engine block somewhere about the 2nd cylinder, on the intake side, alongside the rocker cover. It seems to sit into an aluminIum unit with 2 cables coming out of it, one clearly connected to the ignition system (looks like at HT lead)

I ask as the cable is "armoured" but both the plastic sheath and armour have been warn through where the cable is clearly vibrating against the vertical part of the throttle linkage (up from FI pump)

As it's worn I have adopted the obvious cure, Duct Tape, temporarily but am trying to ascertain the priority and difficulty of fix!

(Oh, and wipers are back and running. Feeling very pleased with myself this morning as I did my first "job" today. Wiper motor and relay swapping, including making up a gasket. All up and running and while this is a minor job for most of you, for a non-mechanical person like me....)

a photo would help, and what car?

If I had to guess it is the temp guage cable. does the end on the block have a brass fitting where it terminates?

if this is the temp guage cable do not cut this as it is filled with a liquid.

The duct tape is on the cable, which is middle of the picture, bisecting the vertical rod coming up from the fuel injection pump.

The unit sits just behind the 2nd cylinder and has two cables into it - one clearly related to the ignition system. This cable attaches (barely) to the copper/rust coloured connection just visible by the clips holding the HT leads in place alongside the top of the 2nd cylinder

Anyone able to shed any light?

Thanks

Tosh,

I think Matt was right. It is the capillary tube for the temp sensor.

Its incorrectly routed I believe. It should run along with the plug HT leads. Also, the right rusty upright should have a cable clip similar to the one on the left upright and it supports the HT leads and the capillary.

The capillary is quite fragile. So do not mess with it. Instead, disconnect the pipes and throttle rod that is in the way to move it back to the upright. Cable clip Part # A115 159 0140

The cable sheath - and it's internal wire armour - are worn through (and so not containing liquid) so I am likely to need to replace it rather than simply re-route it

On the basis that I am a clumsy oaf...

capillary part#, cable part# and I assume the other end is in the binacle

Thanks

tosh,
so, one quick question, does your temp gage in your instrument cluster work?

If the cable in question is worn thru, then your fun has just begun.
you have to send the temp gage and fitting on the end to a repair house.  they replace the cable and calibrate the whole assy.

Palo alto speedo did mine, I am very happy with the results.

It seems to work - it gets up to temp but I've not tried getting it hot enough for the electric fan to kick in...

Palo Alto is a long way from the UK... shudder[:0]
