Firewall Pad & Rubber Bumbers
« on: February 15, 2008, 04:50:01 »
While waiting for the body shell of my car to be completed by the bodyshop, I am doing some planning ahead on parts that I will need.

Can anyone advise me on where to purchase a new firewall pad?  One without the cutout on the right side (for the data plate)?

Also, where can I purchase the small rubber (horizontal pieces) that sit on the top edge of the firewall and protect the bottom of the hood from chipping?  See pic of the Ed Cave masterpiece below.

Thanks in advance!
Bob

The three firewall bumpers are cut from a length of rubber material (about 20 inches long) sold by MB as a 190 car part. The part number is not with me now.

Already cut bumpers are available from KK Manuf at about $6 each.

For proper placement: each bumper sits on top of the firewall just below where each of the three reinforcing hood struts close down on the firewall. Might have to put a drop of glue under each to keep them in place.

I have seen firewall mats with the right side plate area pre-cut but the mat piece is left in place if not needed for the data plate. If you look closely, you can see the die cut lines around the plate area.

Miller's has the bumpers as well. $6 for the set. They also have the firewall pad, but it does have the pre-cut area for the plate.

K&K only has the 2 pc pad ,  it also has the cut out.

MB can sell you the new style pad by the yard,  I think it is the wrong color and wrong pattern

Bob,

If you are looking to create the original look under the hood, as displayed by Ed Cave's example, you should note that the diamond pattern firewall pad is impossible to find.  The "pebble" grain is the only thing that has been available for years.  Maybe Millers, SLS or someone can tell you the manufacturing source and get one made without cutting out the section for the data plate (I find the patched up version annoying myself but there may not be any choice).

The three rubber bumpers are also different in appearance.  I haven't replaced mine yet but I think the new ones have rounded edges versus the original squared off version.

I know these things are minor...I just happen to be an originality freak!

Thanks J.P.

I realize that Ed's diamond pattern (original) is NLA.  I believe he actually pealed his original off and restored it?  I thought, however, I saw the current pebble pattern w/o the cutout outline...somewhere?  Maybe the cut line was there and I just didnt see it in the picture?
Thanks for the info!

Hello Bob,

Matt is correct, the pebble grain is available by the yard without any cut outs from Mercedes. It is much more inepensive when purchased by the yard.
