Three Pointed star

Has anyone attempted or successfully fitted the Merc star to the bonnet/hood of their SL
Or am I guilty of becoming a Heathen

Hello Spotweld,
You will need to open the bonnet fully. There is one small nut on the back of the emblem that will have to be removed.  It should come right off easily.

I think John misunderstood the question, but he raises a good point nonetheless. If you installed a star too close to the leading edge of the bonnet, it would hit the nose panel every time you raised the bonnet.

And yes, it would also be sacrilege! You've already got a very prominent star on the nose of the car.

No, but I did see one on an old Ford about a week after it was stolen from a 280 sedan I was driving at the time.

Believe it or not I once saw a 280 sl with a bulldog hood ornament!  Not very attractive (in my opinion.)  One more note: I don't think you will find any sports car (or sports car wannabe) with a hood ornament - they are for luxury cars.

Of course the pinnacle of black humor/tastelessness and irony all wrapped up into a thinking man's (or woman's) joke was, shortly after the "merger of equals" (we're still laughing at that here) when Daimler-Benz bought Chrysler, I saw a beat-up junker "K" car where the ersatz "crystal" Pentastar hood ornament had been replaced with said three point star.  It was a Kodak moment that passed by so quickly and I didn't have my camera with me...

I don't consider the SL as an out and out sports car
More a piece of automotive art
And it is a luxury vehicle so why not improve the cosmetic appearance
hence fitting the Merc emblem to the bonnet/hood

I can top that one! my  dad put  a custom hood on with an air scoop, good think he keep the orginal hood I though it was pimpish at best but  geinious in engineering. What got me more was the push bars he mounted out of raw steel chromed to protect the grill and rear end. They must of weighted 50 pounds each. Chromed engine!!! That was not  a proper modification for this car that SL means Super leight, not battle cruiser. I had to rescuse her from this mixed bag of saintism.
My dad must of been on the silly pills at the time.

I wouldn't swear to it, but I think you'll notice the standard is, if a Mercedes has a grille star it doesn't have a hood ornament and if it doesn't have a grille star, then it has a hood ornament (as opposed to a flat badge).  However, to each his own...perhaps a necklace made of a hood ornament would be nice too?

My boss has a red '69 4sp manual that now has about 21,000 original miles on it.  When he got it almost 30 years ago from the original owner it had a big chrome Mack Truck bulldog on the hood and a pair of Talbot racing mirrors on each front fender!

Hello Bill,

I once saw a 300SL that had been fitted with the chrome star on the hood! I am sure it has been changed back by now.  The "SL"s always had the more aerodynamic flat badge on the exterior.

I always found the hood star popping up to be a distraction somehow.  I kept looking at it.  It was like the crosshairs or gunsights for the road ahead.  Sometimes it would be tilted off to one side or another, or forward slightly, and annoying then.  It's just another little thing to have to set straight, like combing hair.   These days I am bald and no longer drive the cars with hood stars...  Life seems infinitesimally (sp?) easier in at least these small ways.

Back on topic: surely the three stars already on the w113 are more than enough?  Does a leopard need another spot to be a prettier leopard?

Talbot mirrors were a common upgrade when these cars were new.  Frank Mallory's 250sl came from the factory with the a chromed engine compartment.  It was one of the only two known to exist. The other one being the car presented in Swizerland at the autoshow that introduced the model.

PPS. Another oddball update was to take the nose of an SL and graft it to a 111 coupe.  Wierd looking car.  Was one of the first 111 coupes I got to see way back when.
