1966 230sl rear axle split boot
« on: September 18, 2025, 12:42:52 »
Looking for the clamping tool to install the staples on the split boot. I hate to pay the purchase price they're offering online for a one time use. Anyone out there willing to sell, rent, borrow???

Somewhere in my parts bin I have an unused split boot.
I bought this 25 years ago in anticipation of using it, however with the rear axle OUT of the car and everything being rebuilt the restorer used a solid boot.
I was not aware one needed a special staple assembly, I thought it was just clamps.

However I just looked it up. At Authentic Classics, they will loan you the tool.

Check them out.

I made the tools myself. A pair of pliers, some thick metal, an angle grinder, a drill and some screws and you have the tool.

Below picture of the original tool.

I’m in the Toronto area and have Both the straight and right angle ones.
I’m not sure how we could get them to you to use?

The staples are a lot easier to install than one might think. Follow the BBB or the 190 workshop manual for instructions.

Have a google search for Hog Ring pliers. They can be purchased for $20 or less.
