Automatic transmission ruined when towing?
« on: September 04, 2025, 19:03:10 »
Can anyone help if I ruined my automatic transmission?  I purchased a barn find 1965 230sl earlier this year (2025) and I wasn't around when the tow and trailer truck stopped at the previous owner's place to pick up the car.  I don't know exactly how the trailer company loaded the car onto the trailer, but when I received the car, the automatic shifter to the transmission link was completely off of the vehicle.  The two hard plastic bushings to keep the linkage bar intact had completely disintegrated, which is common.  Anyway, yesterday, I replaced the plastic bushings with new, and thought that perhaps the tow from the previous owner's garage onto the trailer could have been done with the car in "parked" gear.  rather than in neutral.  I'm now wondering if they may have towed the car onto the trailer with a winch when the car was in park.  Can this damage the automatic transmission?  How can I tell if it's damaged.  I won't get a chance to start the car for a few more months as I'm still in the process of cleaning out all fuel injection pump of potential varnish.  The rest of the fuel system has been cleaned.  Thanks in advance for any advice.
