Trunk Paint DB164
« on: August 20, 2025, 23:50:38 »
I'll apologize up front for bringing the subject of the trunk paint back up.  It appears that PPG doesn't produce DB 164 and through my research of trying to obtain the paint, nobody seems to be able to reproduce the correct color, despite me giving them the codes and even formulas.  So if anyone has any suggestions on where I might be able to purchase DB 164, it would be deeply appreciated.

Yes, I did.  I have taken the information to multiple paint suppliers including PPG and have not found anyone able to provide the Mb 164 paint.

Seems like it should be easy to find, but there is a discontinuation of DCC paint required by the formula and the new formula requirements evidently have not been sent to the vendors.  I have called multiple vendors and received the same answer.

Hi There,

a French car paint supplier, Peinturevoiture.fr, offers DB164 "Tiefdunkelgrau Matt" also referenced DB7174: https://code.peinturevoiture.fr/16679.html. It says the paint must be used with a matt finish.

Thanks for the information.  I did finally find the paint, but it was extremely costly and I decided to go another avenue.  The paint was $308.00 per quart.  That seem fairly pricey.

The PPG store was charging me $98 a pint five years ago. You really don’t notice the difference between that color and a Matt black in your trunk. Not sure I would spend that much money again.

This response will not be for the purist, but after some rust work and sealing on the trunk of my 1967 250 SL,
I found that Rustoleum flat black spray paint was a really close match. To be fair, this MB will never be a show car, but I look forward to getting it back on the road after 36 years of ownership.

I’m assuming that there’s nothing really too special about this color vs any other that would dictate the price.

Has automotive paint really gone up in price that much over the past few years?

No, there is nothing exceptional about the paint, other than they have changed the formula.  It is a deep dark grey, but as a few others have indicated, there are other colors very close in shade to the DB164.  Paint has become very expensive and a good paint job is at minimum in the $20k range with paint materials being in the $5k range.
