The Distinguished Gentleman's Drive
« on: July 06, 2025, 13:40:36 »
Hope this is the right place to post this, as it is general discussion but not specifically about Pagodas.

The Distinguished Gentleman's Drive is a worldwide charity event in aid of prostate cancer and mens mental health which takes place on the 28 September.

It's an event that I have wanted to take part in for the last three years but for various reasons have not been able to, last year we were in Luxenbourg on the rally, but this year it is going to happen but is also bitter sweet because at the beginning of this year I received the results from a regular blood test, followed by many other procedures which confirmed the worst.

It is a great, fun, driving event mixing with like minded classic car owners and all in a good cause, either as individuals or as teams. Can I urg you all to look it up and hopefully find the time to take part, get some sponsors and have a great day.

Ray! Don't worry too much! A lot of us are in the same boat and most of the times it is not as bad as it first seems. I am due for a biopsy too but decided to postpone it for 60 days until we return from a trip to Europe. A doctor friend of mine told me years ago: "a lot of men die with prostate cancer but not because of it".
I have been participating in the motorcycle "DGR" several times. Didn't even know, they had a car event.

A friend of mine at work just had the surgery less than 60 days ago and is back to work.  He said he is doing well.  He is not having any serious problems and is glad to be cancer free.

I too have had the "worst" confirmed. Finished up radiation therapy a few months back and just now getting back to "normal" (although wife says the word normal and my name should never be used in the same sentence).

Medicine today can resolve many issues that were unresolvable only a few years ago.

The trick is to get treatment before any cancer metastasizes (spreads) to other organs which means go through the procuedures for monitoring and early diagnosis of any cancers.

Mike Simon's comment is right on point.

I am having the surgery on Monday. Looking forward to a similar outcome.  My Urologist has been monitoring for some time.  Recent spikes in PSA values and biopsy and PET scan results indicate surgery or radiation would be viable options.  I chose surgery.

Fingers crossed for a positive outcome Ray.
I found myself in hospital with Kidney failure just before Christmas but was out a week later and kidneys are now fine. We're very lucky to live in a part of the world where such treatment is immediately available with no worries about cost (although you do have to overlook the mindlessly beaurocratic inefficiencies).

An update on The Distinguished Gentleman's Drive.

We completed the drive on Sunday and finished the day off with a couple of laps of the Goodwood motor racing circuit, all good fun.

The top countries for fund raising were :

Canada $24,875

USA $47,178

Australia $54,923

England £62,124 of which I raised £1,436

Congratulations to everyone who may have taken part all over the world and thank you.

Hope your health is headed in the right direction, Ray

I signed up, forgetting that I’d previously signed up for a 10k and to help my son transport and exhibit his Lego ships in central London. So no Goodwood for me but sore legs and many Lego nerds

While I will not be partaking of the Gentleman's Drive, I did recently have my prostate cancer removed. I was told it is ok to die with Prostate Cancer but, it is not ok to die from Prostate Cancer.
I do not know if that expression made it across the pond but, the cancer is all to common and thankfully modern medicine seem offer several treatments to survive it. Just do not ignore it.
Best5 of luck,
Ted

There is an old saying I have heard many times, partially as a joke, but as you will know, there is a bit of reality to it.

“ so I go to my doctor and he tells me I’ve got good news and bad news…
The bad news is, you’ve got prostate cancer and you’re going to die. The good news is not from this…”

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Ted!

A man visits his doctor. Doctor says he has to run some tests and he will call the man when the results are in. So sometime later, the man gets a phone call, picks it up and it's the doctor on the line. The doctor says "I've got some bad news, and some worse news, which do you want to hear first?" Man says "Give me the bad news first". Doctor says "According to the results of the test, you've got 24 hours to live". Man says, "Well what could be the worse news?" Doctor says "I forgot to call you yesterday".

Glad to hear it RAY!

This joke is actually from one of my all-time favorite movies, not very well known, called 'Tin Men' from 1987 starring Danny DeVito and Richard Dreyfuss. I watch it from time to time on DVD and highly recommend it. It features many Cadillacs and also the VW Beetle:
