Hi, this is what i found:

"All 230SL up to VIN 113042-..-012466, resp. August 6, 1965, had black ashtray lid inserts, regardless of upholstery color. This is also the case with the inserts in the window crank levers. From there on, the color matched the upholstery"

It is correct?

Not certain about the VIN numbers but the early w113 did not have color coordinated ashtrays lids nor window pad inserts.  All were black as you point out.  I’ve seen later produced w113(250SL) with dark brown lids/vinyl inserts in the center console with cognac interiors.   I was told it was OEM but I have no way of knowing that.

This doesn't sound right to me.  I have a '66 (113042-015461) with white-gray MB-tex upholstery, and my inserts are black.  (I think white inserts would look very odd.)

Perhaps some colors got matching inserts, or perhaps with some leather colors?  That said, I feel like original 230s have black.

I looked at the entry for the 1965 changes from Frank Mallory Sr. that we published in Pagoda World. It lists a number of changes (modernization) and includes the door knobs and window cranks in interior colors, but does not mention the ashtrays.

As an aside, my 1970 (Sept build) 280 SL has a red leather interior and the ashtray insert is red.

It looks like early 230's, up until the VIN mentioned below, did have a black handle inserts and ashtray covers.  Later cars have these covers matching the upholstery colour, but there were some exceptions.  As David says, some light coloured upholstery still had black or dark coloured inserts and ashtray covers, but some other light coloured upholstery had matching covers, so there's no blanket statement that can be made

This can be seen on the link to the vdhflipbooks, on the upholstery code page, if you have access

There are a few examples of the pages from this flipbook at the bottom of the upholstery code page
