Lost gas cap key
« on: May 28, 2025, 03:07:31 »
I just purchased a restored 1971 280SL.  It has a beautiful metal chromed gas cap but the seller does not have the key to the gas cap.  Is there a way to get the cap off with out destroying it.  thanks for your help if there is a way.

Awkward situation…

In this car there is one key and it should open the gas cap. If it does not, it means the gas cap or the key are not original.

Usually a car specialized locksmith can be called to open it.

But I would expect such thing to be done by the seller.

Hi Lee i had last month the same problem. I took the glove box key and a kind od burglar tool both in the tumbler and after 1/2 hour of tries, the cap turned.
I was helped with a 3rd hand turning the cap while i was anding those 2 "tools" .
After that i dismantled the tumbler and adjusted the wafers so they were flush when the key is completely inside
