All,

I'm finally putting my mirror back together after having replaced the glass, mirror, and rechroming all the parts... all said, still much cheaper than buying one of these mirrors "new"!

However, I have not been successful in finding a material to join the outer (transparent) glass with its surround. I have used a very small bead of clear marine caulk, but it is visible from the inside, which disturbs me. I removed all the caulk, for now.

Is there a material you all would recommend for this job? I seem to remember the old material was something between double-sided tape and rubber.

I took one apart years ago and my recollection is it had a thin layer of a degraded material perhaps like the linseed putty used to seal the glass panes in old windows (and maybe similar to the caulking under the hardtop chrome). However, it could have been old pale crumbled rubber. Hope you get a better answer.

I ended up using a black liquid gasket maker material sold by JB Weld, but there are similar types. I used a lot to make sure the finish was even and that there were no bubbles or empty spots, then wiped away the excess. It's pretty solid a full day later. However, I'm having issues ensuring there's absolutely no dust inside the assembly. Going to try again with some compressed air.
