230SL Horn contact plate
« on: February 26, 2025, 04:04:36 »
I have been having issues with my horn not working and can't seem to figure out the issue. After removing the steering wheel and inspecting the contact plate I noticed that there is only one wire going to the contact plate (see picture) - is this correct? Or should there be another wire?

Also, I noticed that one of the tiny springs is missing. Can I order this part or is it better to buy a new contact plate altogether?\

Appreciate the help! - Brandon

Hello Brandon, i don't know what springs or other components are on the switch contact plate, but have a look on here for some details and clear pictures, perhaps someone who has had theirs apart may comment

Two wires should come from the column switch, if you pull the switch off of the column and expose the connections, you'll see a brown wire and a black/yellow/pink wire.  A brown wire should go from there to one side of the horn connection, and another wire, either black/yellow/pink or just black should go to the other connection on the plate

Thanks Bob this is very helpful.

Looks like I am going to have to take off the turn signal switch to see if I can find the other wire you mentioned as I don't see it.

Just found this post, your early car may have a slightly different horn contact arrangement, although the wiring will be the same

Hi Bob,

Thank you for this. I called a few suppliers and they did confirm that I need the large spring which I plan on purchasing.

Are the two wires you speak of coming from the turn signal switch itself? I replaced my turn signal switch with a new one last year and there is a dark brown wire coming from it and a red wire that is not connected. I have tried attaching both of those wires to the horn contact plate but nothing happens when I press down on the plate.

I'm trying to determine if my horn contact plate is bad and needs to be replaced or I don't have the correct wires attached. At some point someone disconnected the horn and put in a auxiliarly button on the side of the steering column.

Hello Brandon, i think these new column switches come with two short wires already connected.  The column switch is just used as another connection point, from the 12 way connector under the dash, the loom travels up the column, the horn wires terminating in the brown, ground/earth terminal and the black/yellow/pink terminal.  The short wire from the brown terminal is connected to one side of the contact plate, and the other terminal of the contact plate is the switched earth returning to the black/yellow/pink terminal, which then travels back down the column, eventually terminating at the left hand side horn.  There is a permanent +ve on the other side of the horn.  If you short these two wires together, ie the brown and black, or brown and red wire in your case, the horn should sound, but don't forget the ignition needs to be on

The colours of the short flying leads from the switch probably vary depending on the switch manufacturer

The fact that a separate horn switch has previously been fitted, probably proves that your contact plate failed at some time, although they must be quite simple to repair, clean or adjust

Good luck!

Be sure and check your fuses! Another bit of information, the horns have 12volt (+) supplied to them anytime the ignition is on. The horns are activated when you depress the horn ring which supplies the horns with ground (earth) (-).

Thanks Joe I've checked and the fuse is good. I've ordered a new horn ring - I'm hoping that solves the issue.
