1966 230sl rebuild manual
« on: February 16, 2024, 14:04:24 »
So after a couple of years of body and paint I've finally have her home and going to start putting it back together. I'm pretty mechanically inclined but with all the technical data needed to do the rebuild I'm in bad need of a manual. I purchased one but it not detailed enough, is there a build manual out there that's available to purchase ?

Congratulations on having reached this stage.
I am not aware of a 'build manual' but there are several extensive restoration threads on these forums that should be helpful. Also, exploded parts diagrams such as on various vendor websites should be useful. Finally, various repairs and maintenance manuals, such as the Haynes and Chilton ones, have relevant information.

It's good to see the black paint detail; it's something that so may "professional" restorers get wrong. However, it's extended a bit too far up the inner wing around the air filter area and should only extend high enough so that the body colour cannot be seen when viewed through the grill.

Many, many years ago, (too many to remember), I began my car hobby by restoring C1 and C2 Corvettes, along with restoring first generation Mustangs and Shelby Mustangs. Chevy and Ford factory assembly manuals were readily available in reprints. They were extremely detailed, right down to part numbers and even the finish on hardware. It made life easy. I have never seen anything close to that for MB.

When I took the car apart I took many pictures (never enough),
including of the many nuts and bolts that had to be passivated.

Have you done the same?

Mercedes produced a technical manual, originally in blue and the reprints are in grey, the size of an old style telephone directory. It covers cars from 1958, through the 1960s. Details most of the systems with disassembly. Available on ebay for a few hundred dollars. Lots of specifics on 230sl. Also, some greats parts suppliers like Authentic Classics have hardware fittings types, location and use cases detailed on their websites.

Also, if you're not already I strongly recommend  being a full member on this forum as the access to 'how to's" is brilliant. I am renovating my third 230sl and just became one and realized I wasted so much time before.

So after a couple of years of body and paint I've finally have her home.
Is it 158H or 181H for the paint code? Looks sharp.
