Is there a TTS activation table in sec…
« on: June 02, 2023, 02:14:04 »
Hi guys
My car is hard to start cold
I tested tonight the csv with a test light and it activated for 1 sec when temperature of garage was at 25c or 88f ?
Is this normal ?

Good question.   I am similarly fighting / investigating the notorious TTS ( Thermo time switch) and it would be helpful if there was a table of "ACTIVATION TIME VS TEMPERATURE”, although I know that the temperature sensed by the TTS is either the inflicted coil temperature by the heating coil  within the TTS ( as a result of cranking time) or the coolant temperature.
I note from the Tech Manual/ Thermo Time Switch section (IF YOU HAVENT FOUND THIS YET….. imbedded within the ENGINE STARTING AID section ……this stuff is not easy to find!) that each TTS has temperature rise per 9.5 seconds current applied stamped onto body of TTS.  Eg 20c per 9.5 seconds.
Just today I was able to properly test my TTS and conclude it is faulty.   I followed the testing procedure in ENGINE STARTING AID/ THERMO TIME SWITCH/ TESTING THERMO TIME SWItch…..outlines specification resistance ( W and G connections) vs switch temperature .  Very helpful.

do you wait like 1-2s w/key in the RUN position before cranking?

That helps me a lot.

Hello, the quickest method of proving the TTS when the engine is cold is to connect a temporary earth wire to terminal W.  The CSV will then receive a supply for as long as you crank the engine.  If the car still doesn't start it may be a problem with the cold start relay, although if you are receiving a 1 second signal i would have thought the relay and contacts were fine

Everything you need to know is in the technical manual, but you'll need to subscribe as a full member to access them, well worth it

we got that.

But BEFORE cranking, did you wait like 1-2s w/the key in the RUN position?

Pagoda Notes Vol 2, issues no 2 and 3 have an in depth discussion of the starting aids for the Pagoda. This is available in the technical manual to all full members.

I note from the Tech Manual ...  Very helpful.
And that is why Full Members have access to it, not everyone.  Please post links to Tech Manual pages and the people with access can use your reference.  Thanks.

Full ( card carrying!) member with FULL ACCESS.   Have read and re-read everything in Tech Manual: "ENGINE STARTING AID" / Thermo Time Switch / Warm Running Device….and all the related posts that I can find.
How system is supposed to work seems to have changed every production year.  A bit confusing.
FOR EXAMPLE: (1970 280 SL auto) The way I read the Tech Manual RE TTS and CSV circuit: "cold start, CSV activated for 8-12 sec , depending on ambient.  Hot start….CSV DOES NOT ACTIVATE ( although there was a Mercedes after production adder that allowed CSV to operate for 1 second, regardless of ambient and regardless of engine temperature"…
HOWEVER, my car won’t hot start unless I have activated CSV by jumpering out CSV relay and adding a temporary ground to "W" so that CSV injects fuel whenever engine cranked…regardless of engine or ambient temperature .
The TECH MANUAL in this site is a wonderful resource, and I am glad to have it, but it can be a bit confusing and contradictory at times…..especially WRT the TTS and CSV! ( acronyms rule!)
