1967 230 SL rear differential Pivot bearing install
« on: January 24, 2023, 23:54:03 »
Hey Guys,

I removed the right side axle from my 67. all came apart easily. The axle seals were leaking. The install was not so easy. I tried to install the axle, but the pivot bearing on the axle was having none of it. it would twist and turn and It would not stay straight..

Well, Dry Ice to the rescue. We packed dry ice around the bearing on the axle and waited 20 minutes. We slid the axle in and like magic the bearing went in straight. A few taps with the hammer then tighten up the back plate nuts and the bearing was in place.

I hope this might help someone in the future.

I used a long pipe to tap the inner race on. It worked out ok.
