Missing softtop for my 230SL
« on: January 03, 2023, 21:24:33 »
My car was built without a softtop in 1966 (confirmed on the datacard). But having a softtop will make the car a lot more enjoyable during hot and rainy days.

Apparently, 1137700702 (Softtop frame) is no-longer available through MB Classic Center. Other than paying the blood sucking vampires on ebay   ::) does anyone know another way to get one?

Spread the word and be patient... ;)

113 770 0402

... is the one you are looking for. ;)
A 230 SL or your built year (1965 -1966) should have the frame 113 770 0402, not the 0702.
The latter is for the (later)  280 SLs only.
Of course, you can place each soft top (frame) on each Pagoda but for your car the above mentioned is the only correct.
And luckily these are the easiest to come by.
You could also use an early 230 frame, the one with the wooden bow and the chrome strip above the rear window, the 113 770 0102, and just don't use the chrome strip with your (then) new softtop canvas any longer... That works well. ;D

Well, where to get a complete softtop....?

Spread the word and be patient...; it will eventually pay off for you.
Go to local car shows (cars and coffee, etc.) and ask around. Not unlikely that you meet an Oldtimer saying "Year, I used to own one like these, long sold .... But yes, the softtop should be still there on an attic or so..."

Just be patient and ask around as much as possible.
Of course, Bud's Benz, K&K, etc. are also good sources, but pricey too.

But please consider, the softtop is, besides an M130.983 engine and the ZF 5-speed gear box perhaps, the most sought-after and most expensive part for the Pagoda,
so patience and spread the word.

Good luck,

Achim

I have a 230SL soft top with the wires on either side to stop the fabric becoming pinched

PM me and I'll send you my phone number, I'm in Pleasanton

Check with SLTech, an authority on tops /frames. They might have a few frames laying around.
