USB Bank in Ashtray?
« on: December 17, 2022, 16:33:31 »
Has anyone endeavored to do something like this?

I'm picturing a little USB bank underneath the lid of the ashtray. It could look very smart stowed away under there, and provide some utility to what's hopefully a piece of vestigial trim to most people.

I’ve thought about it but have a bank tucked right at the front of the transmission tunnel where it hits the under dash cards

Here you go. The little round plug in the middle connects a MP3 player (iPod).

Not quite as discreet as the solutions offered here, but I use one of these in the cigarette lighter port. It has a chrome effect trim, and fits in with the rest of the dash. I mount my phone to the windscreen using a magnetic suction mount, so the charging cable just runs from the lighter socket to the phone.

That is pretty much what I was imagining!

Alfred, Is this your work? You could probably start a little side business making this adaptation.

Yes it is.
But I have no intention making more.
I am sure there are many others out there who could do better, or at least think they could do better.  ;D

Not sure when or how this was modified but works very well.. original location was for rear window heater only but space for cigarette lighter. USB cigarette plug and short cable is neat and tidy and doesn’t ruin originality (any more than relocation) Four way flasher was also moved to old cigarette lighter position on dash. Makes a lot more sense for lots of reasons..

Different cars/people have different needs.  I don't have defrost in my hard top, so that area of the center console doesn't have the additional thing (box?) with electronics running to it.  I don't have 4-way flashers on my car, so there is no desire to replace existing in-dash lighter with a knob for that function.  So, placing a solution in the little ash tray appeals to me.  It might be something I do next year.  Oh, wait, it is next year!  What am I waiting for??   ::)

Alfred - Would you have a parts list for this little project?
