Crankshaft for 230sl 127 motor needed
« on: December 11, 2022, 18:25:40 »
My mechanic has informed me  I need to replace the crankshaft in my 230sl with its original 127 motor.  It apparently cannot be repaired.

If anyone  has one for sale or knows who I should contact, please let me know.  Thanks.

I have one but it needs grinding to determine whether it's useable or not.
It doesn't help that I'm in the UK.....

Not that they may be easier to find, but if the search would be expanded to include 220SE, SEb crankshafts, there may be more results turning up

Do you have a standard or an auto transmission?  The cranks are slightly different for both engines and you should get the flywheel with the crank to maintain a balanced unit.

OK, I know what my casting number is for my 230sl (127 engine) crank that I need to replace.

It is 1270310001

Would appreciate knowing if anyone has one for sale. Thanks!

I am not familiar with the details for the crankshafts, but for other parts the "casting number" is not a good ID to go by. Often the raw casting is used for different applications where the final part is machined differently. You may be better off to get the original MB part-number for the 230SL crank.

According to my 230SL parts book, the part numbers for the crankshaft are:

Manual Trans:
   127 030 70 01

Auto Trans through engine # 5119:
   127 030 44 01

Auto Trans from engine # 5120:
   127 030 71 01

Additional note: "...with counterweight, flywheel, main bearing shells and connecting rod bearing shells".
I do not see any part number for the crankshaft only (and the Benz Dr. says you should get the flywheel with it anyway).

          -David

P.S.  The motor number for my early '66 auto trans. is only 3868, so motor number 5120 is probably a fairly late 230.

My engine number which matches the data sheet is 12798112002395.
The search continues.
I appreciate all the comments thus far as I narrow the search.  I am told I also need the damper (balancer) that originally came with any crank I buy, but I am not seeing them being offered that way--just the bare crank alone is being offered.

FWIW, I dissasembled multiple M130 engines and always left the dampner onto the crankshaft. I don't have a 127/230 SL engine unfortunately, closest I (should) have is a 250 SE one, in France.

hello, I'd give Mike Elias at Metric Motors a call. Explain what you need (crank for auto transmission, flywheel, damper) and ask if he can sell you the individual parts. He may be willing to sell the parts without buying an entire long or shortblock.

Hi Bill,

I have another M127 engine automatic, that I will break down and check out soon as I can get all the snow and ice out of the way. I should know this weekend if so.
