1965 230sl 4 Power Steering Pump
« on: August 26, 2022, 20:17:08 »
Can anyone tell me if a is is possible to swap out the power steering pump in a 1965 230Sal with a pump out of a 1973 Mercedes Benz 280. I happen to find a 73 280 in a local junk yard the power steering pump is priced at $26, I have not removed it from the vehicle yet. At first look it looks very similar to the pump in my 1965 230Sal (same location on the engine and mounting brackets but can not be sure just by looking). My pump is leaking badly and needs to be rebuilt. If the pump out of the 73 would work would like to rebuild it and put it in my car.

Not sure if this will help, both pumps should have a Vickers tag with a number on it.  If they're the same and the pulleys are identical, that should be your answer.  Another choice is to take your pump to a NAPA store.  Look for the old guy behind the counter and ask if they can do an "R&R" on the pump.  They (used to, at least) send them to A-1 in Phila.  You will get your rebuilt pump back, ready to install.  Did this with hundreds of automotive components over the years with excellent results.  Don't know if they still do it, but worth a try!
