Rocker covers should be painted in black (or 'Tiefdunkelgrau'), the light body color makes the car look heavier and less 'lightfooted'/elegant.
Interesting that these body color rockers seem to appear more in UK cars than in other countries, although that could just be coincidence/misperception on my part. But I recall even in the Meredith book there is such an example.

If Sir Stirling wanted his rockers Tiefdunkelgrau, I'm certain he would have had them painted that way.  :)

You would expect this to make much more than that estimate.

Hey Michael - according to the article, the repaint was done by a subsequent owner, it wasn't Moss' choice. The dark blue in the photo with him behind the wheel was apparently the original color. Probably the rockers were originally finished properly:

"Moss collected the car from the factory and ... sold it in 1968. In November 1970 it was repainted in the Jaguar Pearl Grey paint you see today, although apparently that’s the only change that has been made since Sir Stirling owned it. "

Looks like the 2-piece 230sl wheel covers were also changed out for more modern ones.

A real piece of Pagoda history. The estimate does seem low for a car of such regal provenance.
Interested to see where the hammer does fall.
Should the car be properly called a 230 or 250 SL ?

So, Sir Stirling owned the car for less than two years and 11,000 miles, and sold it 54 years ago. Well there’s no denying he was the first owner, this is more like “Lincoln slept here” as opposed to something he owned and held dearly for a long time and is being sold by his estate. Nonetheless it will be interesting to see what it fetches at auction.

As I recall the John Lennon Pagoda didn’t fetch what people thought it was going to.
