New Delivery Owner's Packet
« on: June 23, 2022, 12:21:55 »
Would anyone have an idea of what documents/pamphlets etc would be included in a new delivery Owners Packet for a May, 1965 delivery of a European (German Market) 230SL  (Cologne Branch) going to Dusseldorf?

Some ideas could be:

1: Owners Manual
2.Becker Radio Pamphlet (model specific)
3. Data Cards (1-5) ?
4.Parts Catalog TYP 230SL Model 113.042 Catalog A (dated?)
5. Some type of service booklet (dated?)
6. etc

John,

Suggest you learn how to use the various translate applications out there, and see if you can join the German Pagoda club(s) and or the German Mercedes Old-Timer clubs...I think you may be able to get some of these details better framed than from here. Just a thought.

As you know we have a few members here, active, that were original owners of USA or NA delivered cars. Perhaps there are similar over in Germany.

First of all the “Packzettel” form with items included in packet and items checked off and initialed by DM AG employee: Plastictasche, betriebsanleitung, kundendienst-scheckheft, kundendienst-stationed-verzeichnis, ersatzteile-katalog, werkzeugtasche mit inhalt, schlusseltaschchen, scheibenwischer, zigarrenanzunder, kuhlerstern. It amounts to your service booklet, owners service and warranty policy, roadster top instructions, owners manual, parts catalog, Mercedes-Benz world wide service stations, Becker Autoradio Instructions manual, Becker warranty ticket booklet, Becker Autoradio Service locations booklet, Becker installation instructions sheet, and of course your data cards, all this in a plastic folder.

Thank you "zoegrth for your very thorough and complete reply, very much appreciated.

The packzettel (packing slip) paragraph was very interesting to see what  was noted, particularly the last three:scheibenwischer, zigarrenanzunder, kuhlerstern.  Not speaking German, using google translate they seem to indicate: wipers, cigarette lighter and radiator star or cow star?  I assume the concept was to check off to be sure loose items ( like cigarette lighter) were there.

Thanks again as I attempt to develop/build an owners packet for my '65

Keep in mind that you can source a lot of the non-model specific items more easily than the 113. When I reconstructed my "package" I was able to get most items. Just set up a saved search on eBay for the specific item. Then have them send an email when a new item hits the list. I know there are other means for searches, and don't forget German eBay. But you will need a German speaking person to assist.

The hardest for me, which would not be a part of the early car's package, was the "Consumer Information" insert. That is specific to the 280 SL - it was a government mandate, but patience and a standing eBay search finally won out.

One down side, is that I did end up with a number of "other" items that are in the "What should I do with these?" pile

Jon, have you got a picture of this “Consumer Information” insert that you can post? I don’t think I know this document.

At least to me, this has been a very interesting thread.

Would there be anyone out there who either has or could post pictures of some of the items noted like the world wide service stations, Becker warranty booklet, Becker service stations etc.

I am also interested in the correct translation of Kuhlerstern as when I google translate it comesout as cow star or cooler star

Here are the photos

Thanks for posting, Jon.  Back to my archives!!

I don’t recall having seen this before.  When I am back in the states later this year with my car and files I will have another look.  I see that the issue you have was printed in December, 1969.  I assume there must have been at least one earlier printing if they were provided with all 280SLs.  Could be that they were distributed by the dealer in the US and I didn’t get one with my factory delivery.

jb,
I have a number of the items listed in this thread and I have posted pictures of some of them in various threads in recent years.  My car is an early 1969, 280SL, delivered at the factory but not for the German market so some items will be different.  I will look through the pictures I have with me and post what I have here.

JB: "Kühlerstern" is the upright "star" emblem found on sedans. Originally it was not firmly attached and could easily break off or get lost. That's why it probably was shipped loose with the car. Note that some of the things on the "Packzettel" apply to all MB models and thus not unique for W113 or not applicable at all.

I think the 280 SL consumer bulletin would have been for 1970 models and later. There were a number of DOT changes/mandates, and I suspect the bulletin about stopping distances was one of them.

......I will look through the pictures I have with me and post what I have here.

jb,
I found a very few pictures in the computer I have with me and I will post below.  I recall that some of the documents I received at delivery were included in Pagoda Notes.  If you go to the Technical Manual and look at Pagoda Notes Volume 10, Number 3, from September, 2016, you can see these items.   I do have the world Wide Service Books but unfortunately no pictures with me.

Thank you Ralph for following up as you mentioned you would.

I especially appreciate the radio pamphlet pictures as I too have a Grand Prix version , which from what I have seen doesn't seem to be a common choice

I also appreciate the reference to Pagoda Notes.  My car was a Germany sale for in country and the latest owner has been most helpful but unfortunately I have not been able to trace its history any further back.
Thanks again as I try to build my authenticity of info

I apologize if the attachments are necessarily brief.  The Grand Prix radio booklet runs to perhaps 75 pages; the Hirschmann hang tag is four pages and I have only shown one side of the Generator warning tag.

I wish you success in your search for more detailed information and documentation on your car.
