Can anyone help with my data card codes
« on: November 12, 2021, 15:09:51 »
Hi all,

I'm just about to commence a restoration on a 1 of  69 RHD W111 3.5 Cab and it has a couple of unusual options for a European car such as Column gear shift and side markers.

Is anyone able to decipher my Data card and confirm the unusual codes please.

Many thanks

Andy

Might contact Alpinaltd on this site. He produces new data cards from the originals and might know what some of these are.

Andy, here is a code list from Benzwolrld.

997 is the show code - Stationary car for use on exhibition (body and engine made ready for exhibition) Now what the means I am not able to assist with.

740 is (I think) a black top

320 reads as Additional plate and rear seat bench stop for Great Britain.

284 reads as Trunk set, 5 piece

Thanks both for your assistance and the list of codes

The below is an interesting one - I think!

997 STATIONARY CAR FOR USE ON EXHIBITION (BODY AND ENGINE MADE READY FOR EXHIBITION)

Just Googled this and another MB site made a guess that

this possibly means that it was marked out for 'special attention' when going down the production line, ready for the exhibition mentioned. Extra care on everything, bits a little more polished than normal, jubilee clips all lined up along the hoses, fingerprints dusted off, etc etc. Maybe taken off the end of the line and sent to a detailing workshop. And so on.

Also, possibly not filled with any fluids initially so as not to risk drips on the exhibition floor?

For the Pagoda it was a black polish valve cover and chrome injection lines. Don't know if that would apply a cross the board. Certainly what Andy indicates is a very good guess from the MB site.

Didn’t we recently have a chat about “show” cars? I think “spot weld delete” was mentioned 😉

Certainly on later models a show car has extra cosmetic detail such as chrome rocker cover fixings.

Wow- Suddenly this car feels a bit special. I didn't realise the meaning of the code.

it needs a full resto anyway but may find a few things slightly unusual when it is being stripped  :)

V unusual is the 'side markers' on this car as if for the US market, it also has column shift.

The column shift I'll keep as I rather like column shift but it certainly flummoxed me when I first looked at it.

I suppose the last query is what the number '2' means in the 'Hinweis' box? Cannot find anything these codes

Andy, I would make a guess that the "2" in the "Hinweis" (or note) box refers to the item at the bottom right of the data card. I can't quite make out the letters, but since you have the card, you should be able to type that into Google or whatever German translator you might find, and see what it says.

Hey Andy,
You have really got a very strong appreciation to very special cars....
Congratulations!

The "Hinweis" (= Remark) "2"
means that there was more "specially ordered" than could be indicated on the data card, i.e. some special equipment or so - maybe associated with the "Standwagen" option - all mentioned on an extra built sheet.

Best,

Achim

Hey, thanks Achim  :)

I had another RHD W111 cabriolet for 12 years and said to myself that I would never sell it, but last week someone ''bit my arm off' and bought it!  You may have seen it when it was white on one of the European Pagoda trips. I then had it repainted and upholstered etc etc

The car in question here was purchased to restore and sell on- Not knowing much about it - But now the other is sold,  it will be restored to a high standard, and kept by myself  forever as I must have a 3.5 cabriolet!

I now need to find out if it is possible to get the extra build sheet from the 'Classic centre'. Is it possible that the centre in Irvine can help or should I contact Stuttgart?

Didn't they only make something like 80 of the 3.5 cabs in RHD anyway?

Just found some more history for the car which I have not typed into 'google' translate as yet. I think it relates to the exhibition as it says 'standwagen'

Any fluent German speakers Able to translate for me?
