Out and About Today
« on: July 14, 2021, 04:33:01 »
My wife and I ran errands today in the 280sl.  Three people came up to us with compliments on the car.

One said, "I noticed the car when I went into the store and then saw you two inside and knew it had to be your car."  Not sure how to read that, other than correlation to age.

The next person was an 8-year old that asked his mom if he could speak to us.  He was nervous approaching, but finally said "Excuse me sir, but I just wanted to say that I really like your car."

The third encounter was a younger guy driving a late model Rolls-Royce.  We don't see Rolls around our town.  He went out of his way to circle around us and said how much he liked the car and wanted to buy it.  I said it was not for sale.  He asked, "not at any price"?

Had to pause for a second.  Remember *my wife* is in the car.  Before she could finish the sentence, I jumped in and said, "no, not at any price," then thanked him for the compliment and quickly drove away.  Narrowly escaped with the car and title.

I think I enjoyed our encounter with the 8-year old the most.

If it was a silver Rolls it might have been the same guy who raced up from behind me on the beltway a couple of years ago, rolled down his window and shouted, "Pull over!  I want to buy your car!"  I did not slow down and he paced me until I veered off at an exit (not my usual exit).

Gotta love kids who like old cars, they are the future of our hobby!

I don't mind getting the offers to purchase when I am alone, but I just cringe when they happen when I'm with my wife.   The day my wife finds out that my car isn't worth $15,000 I may be toast.

When I got my car I promised my wife that if I had to, I would sell the car (and a couple motorbikes) to help put my daughters through University.  I just spent the last 8 years scrimping and saving and working a third job and got them through with their Bachelors degrees and a Masters thrown in for fun.    I'll be dammed now to sell the car to do rennos on the house.    My car is now priceless.

Last payment on my daughter's Masters program is in September - gotta slow down working and somehow put more money into my car, and the 40yr old boat, and the 18 yr old truck and the 28 yr old harley and we need a new kitchen and bathroom is getting tired and.......I had better lock up my car.....

Mike, it was a black Rolls.  The boy's compliment was priceless.  As you commented, he is the future of our hobby.

I laughed my head off at your $15k. I told my wife it was $80k.
Unfortunately in Australia, anything decent starts at $200k and goes up from there peaking out around $350k Aust. And you think you have a problem. lol

Seems it might have been an opportunity to "upgrade" if the price were in excess of its value.

That's because you drive on the wrong side of the street, and have the steering wheel on the wrong side of the car...making a somewhat "rare" car all that much rare and dear.  ;)

Why not toss out an insane price:  "$500,000 and not a penny less".  That will either shut him up, or he'll agree, in which case take the money and run.

I really can't come up with another car that I would prefer to own.  My kids grew up in this car.  Too many memories.  I think I'll keep it.
