The solid clunk will obviously vary from car to car depending on many factors.  I went to the garage and compared the sound and feel on my two cars.  Not much difference.  Perhaps the 107 is marginally more solid but then it is about 20 years younger and with more than twice the mileage of the 113.

The 113 has a much lighter aluminium door.... the 107 a heavier steel door.... I think this property gives the 107 the edge in terms of the vault closing sensation. In addition, the 107 has an extra fixing on it’s hard top (lockable hinge under rear window) plus the hard top hinges next to the seats are much more solid than those of the 113. These fix the hard top more securely onto the car body further enhancing this vault closing door sensation.

I went to the MB June Jamboree in northern NJ on saturday and had a ball. There were over 100 classic MBs and about a dozen Pagodas. it was funny, at about 10;30 am a silver 1955 Gullwing comes rumbling into the show area and the entire place just stopped and stared! The 113s in attendance were all late model, low mileage queens. They were breathtaking. 

Ralph, I will have to agree with you about the fit and finish of the 113s. These show pagodas were spectacular. The interiors ( and exteriors and engine compartments )  were very impressive - obsessively clean.
So much so that today I ordered new MB tax and a new carpet set from GAT to improve my somewhat ratty interior.

MikeS, sorry if I wasn't clear, but the term spartan I used was in comparison to 107 interiors, not other cars.

I’ve owned both models. My first w113 was a new 1969 that I traded in for a new 1973 R107.  (I have my dads 71 now). Both the ‘69 and ‘73 were automatic transmissions, whereas the ‘71 is a four speed.   While my R107 was refined and genteel and dare I say a tad bit sedate, I have always felt that my w113 was quicker, far more responsive and nimble and much more sprightly.  This was made even more clear when my dad gave his manual. If you enjoy a great driving experience, a manual transmission w113 is the way to go.  They’re exhilarating and transport you to another place and time when you’re behind the wheel.
